Arizona elk Unit 27

I drew an Arizona late rifle tag for Unit 27. I'm not new to elk hunting! I'm considering a self guided hunt, but may break down and fork out some $ on a guide/outfitter. Anyone hunted this unit? What can I expect? Tips?
Thanks in advance!

You can expect to find some of the most remote, severely undulating, rugged and beautifully forested and desert wilderness in Arizona. Unit 27's elevations range from 9,300 feet north of Alpine, to 3,350 feet near Clifton and Morenci. This unit is located throughout the eastern Mogollon Rim (pronounced Mow-Ge-Yawn) and is extremely rough, with lot's of vertical country, and very few maintained roads. I would define this unit as "not for the faint of heart ". The Unit is approx. 40 miles long by 25 miles wide. You'll be in the Ponderosa/Pinyon/Juniper forests on the northern end, and scrub brush, sage, cactus and manzanita in the southern end. Perhaps the most diverse big-game habitat in North America. This unit bristles with plentiful amounts of big game, as well as other variaties of wildlife. Filling your tag will be more a physical challenge than a challenge of your hunting skills. The AZG&FD Regulations has a brief description of the unit, with recommendations for the best locations of each game species. This is also available online, at: http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/hunting_units_27.shtml

I highly suggest that you purchase a Unit 27 Map from HuntMaps.com in 1:100,000 scale. The unit boundaries are extremely tricky in places to define the eastern/western edges.

Here's a quick link to HuntMaps.com:

and Ross Outdoors where you may order the maps online:

Beginning now, start walking each day or you'll regret it if you don''t ...trust me! You're in for one hell of a hunt! Good luck, and I hope this info helps?

AZ Thunder gave some good info. Scout like he said and get ready to walk, the area can be rugged and hold some huge bulls.
Stay away from hunting near the town of Alpine no matter how tempting it may be. G&F is watching for people herassing wildlife and trespassing. Other than that it's hunting in paradise!
Thumbs up
