Arizona, 5B, Late Nov-Early Dec, Bull elk

Greetings....I've been drawn for 5B and haven't hunted there before. Any help or information that you could pass along would be tremendously appreciated. It's my first successful draw in 27 years. Can you believe that? I got my last tag when I was 17. Thanks again and good hunting all.

Congratulations on your draw. Area 5B is a great draw. The advice I can provide for you is dependent on the weather. I have hunted this area both in September (bow season) and late November. If the snow and harsh temperatures have not arrived by the time of your hunt, the elk tend to be in the pondarosa pines. With that said two areas stand out as being dependable to hold good amounts of elk. The area adjacent to Mormon lake which can be accessed via forrest road 125, and the saddle of the twin hills just west of Kinniknick Lake which can be accessed from Lake Mary Road. If weather has moved in and drove the elk to lower elevations, the junipers sorrounding Walnut Canyon just off the plateau is an awesome place. This area can be gotten to form Interstate 40 east of flagstaff. I would be happy to provide more information if you feel necessary. Happy hunting.

I've got the whole unit. I checked with Game and Fish just to make sure. If there's deep snow, I'll hit the southern part. If not, then the north I think.

I can tell you all about the north. You have a wonderful area and it is no secret that the elk roam throughout the 5b area. I have spent most of my time in 5b and 6a from I17 to Winslow all north of Stoneman Lake Road. If you find a need to gain any info about that location, just let me know. tommygolfs@inbox.com

golf had it right. What a great tag. You will see plenty of Elk. I was lucky enough to have an early rifle tag last year and took a opening morning pretty boy, with my oldest son and best friend. This year two of my good buds got drawn for archery tags. You can also hunt the long lake area. But elk are every where in 5b. Good luck! And happy scouting

I've got the 5b Nov. tag also. Never hunted it before but was told 5b south has the most elk and 5b north has the biggest bulls. I went to 5b south two weeks ago and saw over 100 elk from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon. Looking for someone interested in hunting with me as my buddy got a bow tag for 5b and will not be going with me. I live in Sierra Vista. Let me know if interested.

Donald, Slappy,

I have the same tag and am hunting solo. I woud be interested in sharing scouting information and a hunting camp. I will be spending quite a few weekends over the summer learning the lay of the land. As you know last winter a bunch of hunters were stranded by heavy snow just about the same time of year. I think it will pay to have both pine and juniper habitats scouted. Anyways email me at savagman@yahoo.com if interested.

Re: Arizona, 5B, Late Nov-Early Dec, Bull elk Meet ups

Anyone drawn for the late hunt in 5b interested in getting together for some wings, beer, and information sharing? Additionally maybe we could get some of the lone hunters and smaller groups together to discuss sharing campsites? It would certainly be safer than being out there alone.

Hopefully this works. I tried to upload you a video of two Bulls fighting that I caught on a trail camera last year, but the site wouldn't allow it. But here is a picture of one for you. That was in Bargman Park area.
