Archery elk - Colorado

My sons and I are planning an archery elk hunt this Sept, in units 78 and 81. These units include the entire South San Juan Wilderness and some the San Juan National Forest, and the Rio Grande National Forest.
Being from Wisconsin, we won't have an opportunity to pre-scout the area.
I have forest service maps, and USGS topo maps of these areas to study.
We plan to camp on National Forest land and hunt on foot from there.
We are currently planning on roughly the Sept 12 - 22 timeframe (with the knowledge that the first few days will also be muzzle loader season).
I would appreciate any info anyone might have on where to start looking for elk in this area, any experiences anyone has had in this area and any tips to help us out, and if there is any meat lockers in the vacinity.

Thanks for any help
Jeff

44mag,
Take a look at our tutorials on using the CDOW NDIS mapping system (http://gmuresearch.com/mappingPart3.php). We show you how to overlay the elk summer concentration and activity data on top of a topo map. A great place to at least start your detailed search.

However if you want a quick one page CO Elk Summer Activity map, click here (http://gmuresearch.com/coelkmap.php). This is a one page, statewide map, showing not only the elk data, but the units, and counties.
