I've never baited animals but

I've never baited animals but I have hunted deer under crab apple trees before. Lots of big bucks loved to come and feed there. I try to find a food source for atleast one of my treestands near an apple tree would be a great place.

I've had deer and elk trample our apple trees in our yard during the winter.

Deer are like a lot of

Deer are like a lot of animals they have a sweek tooth and love apple and apple orchards.  I have seen more bears aftere the crab apples but they should work for deer too.

Apples or Crab Apples for bait?

I've never used bait either, don't think it is legal here anyway...

I did hunt in an area once with an old abandoned orchard that still gave fruit and the deer frequented it often in search of downed apples. I only happened to see does feeding there, but think it because the bucks were hip to hunters staking it out during the season and came at night? I would imagine it makes good bait if they got used to finding it in a given location...?

Once you cut them in half you

Once you cut them in half you let the juces flow and it is easier for the deer to smell the sweetness of the fruit not to mention get right to the meat of the matter.

We've taken out apples before and the deer chowed them down. Deer just love apples.

Apples, pumpkins, watermelons

Apples, pumpkins, watermelons and corn will all attract deer and bears, if in bear country. Persimmon tree are the ticket aroung here to set up on for deer.
