This is the Anything Goes right??

I've never shot a woodcock. Matter of fact I don't even know what a woodcock is!

So is shooting a woodcock a good or bad thing?

I think doves should be regulated like any other game animal. If the population goes through the roof, you have to bring it down. Otherwise the out of control population could eat up all the resources necessary for another species, perhaps even one that is endangered.

A woodcock is very similar to a snipe... a snipe/woodcock are small fast flying birds. The snipe is found more around marshes and the woodcock in... well the woods. I shoot them, my brother eats them. I have never tried either but know that you would need about a dozen of them to fill you up.

ChesterGolf, you are right about that, it takes a lot for a feed.
They are a funny looking bird. Their eyes are on top of their head, and the beak is about 3" long.
In the spring they have a neat little dance that they do. We call them a boggie bird.
They are a legal bird to hunt now that is, but I have heard talk that it may be harder to hunt them in the future

Ok, I thought they must have been a small bird based on Maineguide's comment, but wasn't sure. Thanks for the info.

The only time I had heard "wood" and "bird" in the same sentence was in reference too a woodpecker. Which it doesn't sound like these are.

Yeah that is interesting, they talk about the "boogie dance" that maineguide was talking about. Must be something to see those little birds hopping around like that.

I will tell you what is fun, and that is calling them to you in the spring.
They almost hit you when they fly to you.

bitmasher, you try it in the spring at the edge of dark around alder patches. They sound like a fart and then they hit the air and make a whistle sound.
While they are in the air you make the fart sound, and they will come to you.
Give it a try.

It sounds stupid but it works.
