Anyone use a 243 for deer ?

I just a sako 243, and want to know what bullet to use for deer ? Should I go with the 100gr nosler partitions , or is the 85gr game king better ? Can any of you 243 shooters help me out ?

I agree. In .243 it's better to use a 100gr bullet. Save your money and use a basic Reminton Core-Lokt Express or Winchester Silver Tip. Trust me when I say that you don't need a premium bullet to drop deer sized big game. They can be taken successfully with any standard jacketed soft point, and have been for decades.

I have used a 6mm Remington which is ballistically the same as the 243. I used 100 gr bullets in mine.

Don't you mean that the 6mm Remington uses the same caliber bullet that the .243 uses, but 6mm Rem is a ballistically superior cartridge?

I've alway favored the 6mm Remington over the .243 Win for that reason alone. Just not sure why the 6mm Rem never really caught-on with too many deer hunters or rifle makers.

I would have said to go with the 6mm, but Elk-Aholic already has a .243.

I don't think there's enought difference in the two to make an argument for one over the other. The argument would boil down to avaliability of ammo if you don't reload and the rifle you want it in. The 6mm is a bit to long a case to work really well in a short action, the magazine well limits how far out you can seat the bullet.

I have shot two deer with the 243 and my ex shot several with the 6mm. I saw no difference in either. 100 gr bullet would be what I have used but I've heard a lot of people like the 90 gr bullet. I doubt there's a lot of difference. Start going below 90 gr and I believe you'll find the bullets a bit to lightly constructed for hunting.

The difference is only about 100 FPS so even though it is a bit faster it is nothing to write home about. I agree that it is a shame the 6mm Rem. didn't catch on. It is a great varmint round and I have dropped a couple of deer with it. I find the wound channels awefully small so I opt for larger caliber for medium and larger game.

My buddy has used the .243 exclusively for deer for over 25 years. He hunts in many states with this rifle. Last year I saw him drop a buck where it stood at 250 yds. He uses 100gr. Nosler Partitions. Don't ever think that your .243 isn't up to the task as long as you do your job with good bullet placement.

I killed my second white tail ever with a 243 shooting a 100 grain bullet (don't remember what kind, but I assume it was factory). I hit the sucker right in the heart and still had to drag him 250 yards back to the blind. I shot him from 120 out. It's enough gun for deer, but you really need to place that bullet right, or you'll have a bunch of wounded deer running around. That small of a hole doesn't leave any kind of a blood trail to track the suckers... very easy to loose them. I found mine by nearly tripping over it. Now, I don't use anything smaller than a 7-08 for deer. I usually use my 35 whelen or 358 win whilst hunting white tails...BIG BULLETS MAKE BIG HOLES. Thumbs up

Oh yeah, when hunting deer with that pee shooter, always use good expanding 100 grain bullets. Yes

I use a Remington 600 6mm Remington a lot. It will take mule deer to 400.
