Anyone else watch cable channels such as the National Geographic channel, History Channel, or History International? Are these channels losing the idea of what type of channel they are and what types of programs they are supposed to air? They just seem to be losing scope. When did Nat Geo start focusing on gangs and prison life? I remember when their scope and focus was on nature and science, not incarceration.

I noticed for the last 5 years or so History Channel started airing programs that have nothing at all to do with history. Modern things and future stuff like Modern Marvels, UFO encounters, Monster Quest, Ice Road Truckers, Greatest Catch, and most recently Axe Men. I mean don't get me wrong I love these show! But what do they have to do with history? Anything? I think these programs should air on the Discovery channel or the Learning channel.

I remember when the History Channel aired programs on ancient times, Roman times, middle ages, revolutionary and colonial times and recent history like WWII and Vietnam. For a while there back in 2000 and 2001 it became know as the Hitler Channel because of all the third reich stuff the channel aired. Maybe they just got tired of being refered to as the Hitler Channel. Think

I wish the DIY channel would just get real about their subject. Where are all the real experts on the DIY channel?. There seems to be only a few like Norm Abrams and Tom Sylva and the rest of the crew from This Old House. Real builders, guys with beer bellies, grey hair, rough calloused skin and tools that show decades of hard use. Not those so-called veteran carpenters, 23 year old female hotties with a new hammer and new tool belt, or a metro-sexual male in a pressed starched dress shirt with well manicured hands trying to build a shelf or put up a wall. When did all these former professional football player become builders and general contractors? Give me a break. They should have real credible people on those shows. Gotta hand it to the DIY channel though, at least they stay focused on their subject matter.
I pay money for this service and I expect the people responsible for the show line-up at these networks to do their job and come up with some creativity. It's pretty obvious that they are really getting lazy.

It all started when MTV stopped showing videos years ago. It's tough to fill up that much programming, so they start branching out into other things their audience is interested in.

I used to watch History Channel a lot during my morning workouts, but lately have been watching DVDs instead. I like HC's programming, but can't stand the commercials. The "Things We Buy" commercial makes me want to puke -- "Who knew that old watch could be worth so much money?" Then there's the omnipresent Pat Boone selling reverse mortgages: "Hello, friend..." Dude, I'm not your friend, and I'll never forgive your daughter for putting "You Light Up My Life" on the radio 50 times a day for weeks.

Based on the commercials, I have to conclude that the typical History Channel Viewer is 80 years old, broke, in arrears on their taxes, confined to a scooter, and can't figure out how to use a cell phone. It's hard to get a good treadmill run to that.

I could deal with all of that. I just can't stand the sham wow guy. Am I the only one that gets creeped out by this dude? He looks like a cross between Jim Carey and Jeffrey Dahmer. I keep picturing him saying " Yes it wipes up blood and entrails too" " Gallons and gallons of blood!".

I kinda like the sham-wow guy. Ever see his new gig, food chopper. He's quite the salesman. But, I do see what you are saying. Vince is creepy looking. Looks like some dude you'd see on your local sexual-offender registry website. Laugh

Appears that Animal Planet has deviated from their scope too. They are now airing old episodes of "I shouldn't be Alive". I loved that show and and glad to see some re-runs of it, but on Animal Planet?

It's kind of like the equivelent of Smith & Wesson selling handcuffs and sunglasses, which they do.
