"hotter than a devil's nut sack" heh heh lol bet it is!

Now why would they lick the camera? Wouldn't be a little salt lick action you got going on out there now? Just kidding, although I don't imagine baiting for photos is illegal.

Keep plugin with the huntin and post back if you tag one.

bitmasher, haven't had any luck yet, although I could have taken that forky picture a few times now. On one evening I caught sight of a really nice 4x. Trail cams never did pick him up..? So I have been waiting for him to show himself again. Last time out I watch that forky rub the velvet off his antlers on some star thistle. It took him about 35 minutes to get it all off. He was really going at it. Normally they'll use saplings, preferably small pines. This was the first time I had ever seen one use this type of weed! Learn something new everyday, it seems. The three point is still in velvet as of yesterday. Although both of them have dropped their testicles. Not a bad idea you had on putting a salt lick out for the trail cams. I'm sure that would bring them in, but DFG here in CA probably would want my ass..............

Well it sounds like you are definitely running into the 4 and 3 point on a regular basis. So you definitely should be able to fill your tag if something bigger doesn't come along.

Maybe that buck rubbing on the star thistle is just a little dingy in the head, hasn't quite got the velvet rubbing thing down yet...

In some states it is legal to use minerals, it isn't considered baiting. Even so if you are just using the salt/minerals for taking pictures no harm done.... Hell you could even say you were increasing the vitality and general health of the herd!

I'll check into that, and take a better look at the laws for CA. As it reads now, you cannot feed any deer period! As for minerals and or salts you can't hunt within 400 yards of such a site. Maybe I should try planting a food plot like some of our Eastern cousins do. I dont think they would consider that feeding them, since it's not by hand or by some type of automatic feeder, but by nature itself. We'll just call it habitat improvement!!

Hmmmm... interesting I can imagine that there would be restrictions if you were doing this to bag game (during season) with bow/rifle ready to go.

But I honestly don't see any harm in doing this if you are taking pictures?! Photographers will call in game to take the pictures. I guess I don't see how these laws are helping anybody or animal...

Oh well, yeah just make a food plot and call it habitat rehab or wildlife rejuvination. That at least has the right buzzwords, but who knows with these jacked up laws...

Well it has been a while since my last post, but if the mod. could post the pic I sent in, you'll see one of the bucks I ended up with for the early season this year. Hay bitmasher, hows it hang'in?

Here is the picture:

That is a nice mount! Who did the taxidermy work?

I guess at some point I need to make it easier for people to share pictures through the server....

Mod, Thanks for the compliment on the mount. Over the years I got sooooooooo tired of waiting tooooooooo long to get my mounts back from the taxidermist shops, I started doing my own. Thanks for posting it! As far as making it easier to post pics, the current system is fine by me.

I'm impressed! How long did it take to learn how to do taxidermy? Did you teach yourself from books?

Since I do alot of back woods hunting I've always caped the heads out myself. I figured if I could do that without messing up the hide, I should be able to tan and mount it. So one year I took this small 3x2 ordered a supply catolog and away I went. When a few of my hunting buddies saw my first mount, they were shocked and didn't believe me when I told them I was the one who mounted it. I guess I had a nack for it. I just try and make them look as real as possible. But ever since then I got myself in a bit of trouble, and Now they want me to mount their deer. OOP'S!!!! I should have never told them. Anyway, I've been doing it for a while now, and yes, I do some mounts for others, but on a limited bases. Everyone I know wants me to start mounting other animals, but I tell them JUST DEER!- you turkey. HA HA HA......
