Anybody seen or heard anything about this elk?

I received a picture from a friend of mine, of this ridiculously huge elk. The only info sent with the email was...
"should net out at about 530" non typical. He has and unbeleiveable outside spread of 79". This is the biggest bull ever taken with any weapon."

I personally think the picture has been "paintshopped". Some of the antler points look to identical.

Anyway, just wondering if anybody has seen this and has any additional info on it....if its real...

Yes, that picture has been making the rounds. The Boone and Crocket website has an article about it on the "Trophy Watch" link. It is a real elk, but it was a penned raised bull sad (there are pix of it eating out of a barrel) and is not eligible for the record books.

Yes it is an elk from a game farm. I was also told by a friend that it is a Manitoba elk (sub-species).

Those sure are some nice antlers on that beef cow. I wonder if they had the cowboys lasso it first or if they shot it in the corral all by them selves.
Seriously those are some crazy antlers, horns, no anlters, oh whatever.

Petersen's hunting magazine had an article on the Bull and the picture. The bull was said to have been killed in the Idaho Selway-Bitteroot wilderness area by a bow hunter and scored 500+ pts., but was later to be discovered as a canadian bull that had been pen raised on a buffet of oats and grain.

what is the deal with Idaho....last year there was two Canadian pen-raised bulls over 450 BC points that made there rounds and were being claimed as Idaho's Selway-Bitteroot....I have hunted Idaho and know many people who have hunted in the Selway and all and all Idaho just dont have the genetics to produce some kinda freak of nature bull over 450 or 530 Boone and Crockett points.....well unless Rose Lake Elk Ranch out of Cataldo Idaho starts throwing some supplaments in with there feed....and for some mad reason there fence was to be cut in the dark the night before elk season opened..... Evil! .....ha ha Jk but seriously ......

Here is an example of what it going on with the fenced hunting of elk. This is not unusual, it is the norm. The hunt farms go and get bulls from the producers and kick them out in a pasture in Saskatchewan for the so called 'hunt'. Saskatchewan is the only province in western Canada that allows the hunt farms for elk and deer. If this turns your stomach, it should.

But remember these hunt farms only exist because a lot of 'hunters' out there are willing to pay the price and are more concerned about a trophy on the wall than the hunt and the experience.

That's eye opening for sure. I can't believe they have them numbered, just like a fast-food combo meal!! Yeah, I'll take the #61 please............

Oh wait, can you change that to the #7A? Thanks. And hold the photos with the high fence.

Wonderful!

I talked to the guide at the chicago sports show last week.He had replicas of the horn on a mount. He tried real hard to convince me that that it is a fair chase. But its like I told him I have seen all to many elk hunts behind fences were the elk just look at you and when they shoot them they just stand there. Shame on You!

Just a little off topic, but I read in an outdoor mag, won't mention any names, about a certain editior shooting a bull elk just before dark with his bow. The guide was worried about finding the bull, so after a couple hours they head out to the area where the bull was. They see the bull in the headlites heading for a dark swamp, obviously wounded. The "hunter" gets out, grabs a rifle and shoots the bull in the headlites.

Now this was on one of them game farms, but I though that the law applied regardless of private land.

This was an actual story in a magazine, written by the editior, who was the hunter, unbelievable.
