Anybody here from Georgia?

Hey everyone! I hope you can help me out with this.

I'm going to visit some of the suburbs 45 minutes to an hour or so north of Atlanta next month. My wife and I are thinking of relocating there (going out there to look at houses Big smile ). The average 1100sq ft home with a little land in the towns we're looking at are about $190,000. In San Diego, the same home (with NO land) is about $450,000 !!!

I, of course, would like to know how the hunting is in Georgia, particularly the areas North of Atlanta.

Is there a lot of public land to hunt on? Do you have to belong to clubs to have access to decent deer?

What about pigs?

Any bird hunting? Duck, Quail, Dove, pheasant, etc?

What do you think about the Hunting Seasons? (exe: California gives you 3 1/2 weeks to tag 2 deer with a rifle, and about 5 weeks for a bow - Also, most of the Big Game Deer seasons are the same dates as the Turkey, Dove, and Quail seasons - so it's impossible to do a good job hunting all of them)

How does the Department of fish and game rate. Do they actually do a good job? (Cali's about as strict as it can get - look at our Gun Laws for crying out loud!)

Please TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU CAN about hunting in Georgia (and even fishing - i like that too)... Thanks a Million!

Well, my questions about the Season's have been answered - thanks to the post on 2004 Georgia Seasons

But the DWR does not actually describe the hunting... Is it mostly private land? How is the public land?

How is the deer hunting?
Is there any good Pig hunting on public land?
How is the Duck hunting?
Dove and Quail?
Turkey?

Tell me anything and everything about hunting in GA!

Thanks a million!

Did you have any luck finding out about any good hunting around Atlanta? I am new in Atlanta from Louisiana and am looking for a place to deer/duck hunt.

Not really.

From what I've heard there are areas for hunting all over Georgia... you just have to find them. My buddy lives up in Gwynette county and he shot a deer in the woods in the easement his back yard is up against, just happened to be in the right place with a shotgun at the right time. There is a power line a ways behind his house and it's forest on both sides with a creek.

But there are many, MANY hunting clubs and private lots you can pay to hunt in southern Georgia. 2-5 hours from ATL where the hunting is excellent. If you make the right friends, some members will invite you down for free.

Howdy

Well I never realy got into bird hunting but the Deer and Hog hunting is pretty good here in South Georgia. I am in Lee County and I am located in the Big Buck Capital of the State 8) . Most of the big bucks killed in Georgia are taken in Dougherty, Lee, Worth, and Sumter County. I wouldn't say you would have to hunt one of the plantations here to get a big deer but it does help considerably. I mount a lot of big bucks from this area and about 1/2 of them come from plantations. I do see a lot of nice bucks taken from Public and Private Land Wink . Lots of ppl usually get on a yearly lease down here.

As for Wild Hog.....you can find those about every where....Lot of plantations and big farms are trying to get rid of them. If you know the right ppl you can usually get permision to hunt them. Like I said they are all over. You can hunt them on public and private land and some WMA's as well.

I hope this answeres a few of your questions...

Great to hear from you!

While I have decided not to move to GA, I'm going to stay in San Diego, I do want to go to GA for a week or so to get venison for the freezer. I'd be happy with all does... Of course I'd love a nice buck, but I would be there for the meat.

There ARE some beautiful mule deer in southern California, it just takes YEARS to find one! I'm not going to stop hunting for one of these So Cal trophies, but I am tired of eating Tag Soup for the rest of the year!

I want to hunt an area with lots of trees, grass, brouse, and bugs - that is also full of small deer with a state that gives you a lot of tags too!

Do you know of any private land where I could pay a REASONABLE tresspass fee for a week of hunting in a doe rich area?

Thanks!

Well......

Well OZSTRIKER22......I am not sure realy....I think you could hunt a WMA.....you could get ahold of DNR down here in Ga.....They would be able to tell you where you could hunt. The deer limit in Georgia for a General Tag was 12 Deer (10 does and 2 bucks....one buck any size the other 4 points on one side or better).

But.... I have herd that they are going to raise the Tag Limit this year to 17 deer. (15 does and 2 bucks ...... one buck any size the other 4 points one side or better)

I emailed the DNR so we'll see what happens.
