That sounds like a 22 magnum. That would be good for varmits and coyotes in a pinch.

And the 22mag and 22LR ARE NOT interchangeable!!!! 22LR rifles aren't built to design the extra stress of firing magnums.

A 22LR is a .220 bullet whereas a .22WRM is a .224 bullet and as Saskie said should never be interchanged. There is also the .220swift which is a centerfire 22 that is deadly on coyotes. This is my primary calibre for yote hunting but I will admit to using the 300 RUM once this year... and that kills them too. Wink

For what it's worth, especially given your limited finances stick with the 30/30 for now. It's an excellent first rifle and will handle almost any hunting you've mentioned as long as you remember it's range limitations. Go to the range when you can, get familiar with it, learn to shoot well and hunt safely.

Later down the road after you've learned the basics and have more cash then you might want to look at something like a 270 (for example).

I'm with Saskie on this one. If $$$ is a problem the last thing you need is another rifle. You can buy a lot of 30/30 ammo for the price of a gun.

All the gun choices are fine, another suggestion for close range is a 12 gauge loaded with #4 buckshot for close range. The most important thing is calling them close enough for a shot. I suggest starting with a rabbit distress and call with it for about 5 to 10 minutes in my experience most cyotes and fox respond quickly unless they have been called to alot. If that dont bring them in switch to a howler which works much better than most people think. When hunting deer, turkey, elk, ect.. tou always use the call of the species your hunting, why should it be different for cyotes. In fact if I am hunting strictly cyotes and not worried about scaring off fox, I only use a howler and trust me it works very well.

Thanks for the info!!!!!!I will definatly try that on my hunt! Also...Does anyone know where "Lone Pine,California" is? My dad just bought this book that has pictures of california from a hang glider. And in one of the pictures it show a beautiful place that just looks awsome for hunting, so I looked it up on internet and found that you could hunt there but have not found where it is located. Thanks again, any info on that would be good "What types of animals you hunt there....so on!

i would personaly recommend the .223 i have had a lot of luck with it. It seems to do the job even at lond distances. I use 65 grain holow points.
Good luck!

coyotes aren't hard to kill and a 30-30 a little too big, so you need a smaller gun, I would say that a 22-250 would do and shoot some 55 gr hollow points with it , they just go in an blow up most of the time and you won't get much damage with them that way, I shoot a 220 swift but unless you reload, ammo is expensive!
I like the heavier 22 cal bullets cause they don't scream and I seam to have better accuracy with slower bullet.

if youwant a cheap call for coyotes find a squeeze toy and remove the squeaker. blowing this brings the wolves in pretty good. I guess it sounds like a rabbit in distress.
