not good ,it's hot and the bait is getting nasty looking. Haven't been hit in 2 weeks The neighbor got one last weekend but I haven'n talked to him yet.

I agree, too hot. Still coming in late evening & early morning for us too.
Should cool down a little this weekend.

I'm hunting in east central Minnesota and have been having consistent activity at the bait site every week. The warm weather seems to be keeping most of the activity 'til after dark though. This past Friday evening I had 2 yearlings come by just after 6pm. They were acting nervous and only stayed about 10 minutes before they moved on. About 20 minutes before dusk, I had a sow with 3 cubs come in and work on the bait heavily. The sow was acting nervous also and would grab a doughnut once in a while but mostly just kept on acting restless. They were there for about 15 minutes until they were scared off by what I assume is the dominant boar in the area. I hunt on the edge of a large cranberry bog full of spruce and tamarack and just as it was getting dark, I heard this loud and deep "woof" and snorting from the bog. Two of the cubs started to bawl and climbed trees while the sow with the third cub in tow ran down the trail. Now I've got mom woofing at her 2 cubs that are in the tree trying to get them out of there and I've got the big guy in the swamp still woofing and snorting and thrashing back and forth chasing them all off the bait site. Well, by the time mom and her 3 cubs left it was so dark I couldn't see a thing. I sat there another 10 minutes and didn't hear anything else. I'm sure after scaring the smaller bears off the bait, he just sat back and waited to approach until well after dark. I was back on stand on Saturday, but no sign or sound of him. I'll give it another try this weekend. Let's hope for cooler weather so they start feeding earlier in the evening.

Hey Live, what are you using for bait?

Heres what I've been using this season........60-75 lbs of meat scraps, 4-5 dozen doughnuts, 25 lbs of stale bread, 5 gallons of apples, a dozen ears of sweet corn, 5 gallons of dog food. I pour either grease or maple syrup over the dog food (depending on what I've got at the time) and then mix in a 7 lb can of tuna into the dog food (I buy it cheap at Sam's Club). I top the whole pile off by sprinkling 2 or 3 packets of raspberry jello powder over the breads/sweets. The jello really gives off a great sweet berry smell. I've got a friend who works at a large Cub Foods and he can sometimes get me a supply of day old bakery items. Last week, the store had about 3 dozen frozen Mrs Smith's pies that were damaged in shipment that I put out....apple, peach, blueberry and pumpkin pies. The bears ate every last bit of those. I also do a honey burn each time I am on stand. I'm hoping for cooler weather this weekend. Maybe it'll bring the bears in a little earlier.

do you think the honey thing works how long does the bait last it sounds like alot of stuff

I live about 2 hours from where I hunt, so I can only re-stock it once a week. I try to put enough bait out to last the week. Activity started slow in mid August, but there's enough interest in the bait site now that its usually cleaned out by the following weekend. I've used the honey burn in years past and have usually gotten good results. I only use it when I'm on stand. It puts out a lot of heavy thick white smoke that drifts with the wind and also sticks to leaves and branches, etc. so the smell lingers longer than the smoke does. Plus, its entertaining....one time the honey got too hot and caught fire. I had flames shooting out of the tin can about 2 feet. Luckily it was a wet fall or I'd have had to climbed down out of my stand to put it out before I set the woods on fire.

I burn when I bait I have a smal coffee can nailed to a tree and heat it with a torch till it smokes for about 10-15 min butt I don't remember if it smoked alot or I backed off with heat before it really got smokin (don't need a forest fire either!)then when I'm in my stand I use 2 cans one on top the other and heat with a candle not much smoke thoug was going to try sterno but thought that might get to hot and start a fire I have a little bench I set this stuff on just far enough from stand so I can still see it .

I use the small cans of sterno. They burn for about an hour or so and put out enough heat to get the honey really cooking. The time I set the honey on fire I had tried using a large can of sterno....the flames were pretty impressive. Some guys in the area where I hunt also burn bacon grease in the same way as honey. They swear by it, but I haven't tried it yet. Maybe I'll give it a shot sometime.
