Antler preservation tips?

I'm a non-hunter who found a set of black-tail antlers and a set of chital (Axis) deer antlers this weekend in the northern cali coast. Is there anything I need to do to "treat" them so they are preserved? Or will they just last as is? I already cleaned them with soapy water to get the grime off.

Are axis deer native? I didn't think there were any native axis deer in North America. Just curious...

They should keep as is, although over the course of years (10+) you may get some chalkyness on the outside of the antlers. I believe this is due to oxidization and being in direct sunlight may accelerate it. Although over the course of a few years you probably won't notice any difference. So you can just leave it plain if you'd like for all practical purposes you won't notice any difference.

Some folks like to put a little varnish on it. I think the oily layer of the varnish prevents oxidization and it gives the antlers a deeper brown color.

I don't think the axis deer are native but, there is a wild huntable population living in the coastal areas of Maryland.

The Axis deer aren't native but were introduced north of the SF Bay in the 1950s. It is still a small population but have begun to spread into the Olema Valley (private lands/ranches)and the hunters love them because they are considered invasive and don't need deer tags (or so I'm told).
Thanks for the info.

As long as the antlers are kept inside and not exposed to the elements, they will remain in their current condition for decades.

Congrats on your "find"! Wink
