antler mount how to advise

Hello,

I'm sorry if I'm asking a question that's already been answered here before but my "search", at least the way asked, didn't turn up much of in the lines of help.

My youngest boy shot his first buck this past week. We skinned and butchered it up together.

I'd like to make an antler mount for him but I'm not too sure how to go about it. I'm OK as far as the wood working and attaching part of the process goes but not so much OK as far as preserving the skull/hide/hair.

So far all I did was cut the skull and antlers off, not removing the hide/hair. I have it soaking in a brine solution at the moment. I'd like to retain the hair/hide to cover the skull around the antlers base.

Any help much appreciated.

- Thanks - Jay

Why dont you boil the head down and make a skull mount out of it. Put it in a big pot and boil it down outside and then put it on a nail on the wall. They look pretty good that way.

Thanks Stickers.

Well, that's one way for sure and I agree, they do look good.

I was kind of trying to figure out how to preserve and save the hide and hair though.

Thanks again, - Jay

Just an idea

Take and scrape all of the fat and meat off of hide and then put the Borax to it.
Rub it into the hide and pin it down on a board or plywood. If the Borax looks wet in a day or 2 redo it again. And it don't hurt to leave extra on the hide.
I use Borax on fur and feathers for fly tying works great and keeps a long time. Thumbs up

Greenbet,

Those are some nice looking mounts that buckstumps do. Now, if I could ever talk the chief interior decorator into letting me bring one in the house!

I googled up some info about tanning. I may have f'dup by leaving it in the brine for a week, but I took it out, trimmed off some more remaining tissue and then thoroughly salted it, inside and out. I'm going to check it in a few days and see how it's drying up. Then either resalt it or put the borax to it.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions so far.

The way I tan my bobcat pelts is rock salt water and battery acid. let is soak in this solution for about a week. Pull it out and scape the flesh off of it and put it back in for another two weeks. Pull back out and wash with warm soapy water and then rinse with clean water. Let it dry. As it dries you will want to slowly break the hide. Do this by rubbing the hide over the back of a wooded chair. This wil keep the hide flexable after it dries. I use 2LBS salt, 2gallons of water, and 8OZ of battery acid. I like to keep the water temp aroun 65-70 degrees. Some times you will have to use rocks to keep the hide submered. This should work on deer hides but you may have to double or triple the ingrediants. Good luck.
