Antelope Decoy Hat

I just bought one of these new Antelope decoy hats. Not sure how it's going to work, but I think it should. It may look a little silly, but looking forward to trying it out. If we get as much rain as last year during August, when blind hunting over water was pointless, this might be a kind of fun. The bad part is, I have to wait five more months to try it out.

The outfit doesn't look so goofy when the models are wearing them. It may not be something you want to wear with a camera around. Then again, as goofy as it looks, antelope can be pretty goofy too. Wouldn't surprise me if it works, especially during the rut and in broken or brushy country where you can sneek & peek. It'll probably be a blast to experiment with. Thinking about it, it doeasn't seem any worse of an idea than two knuckleheads sneeking up to a goat hiding behind a plywood cow silhouette and that's been proven time and again.

Re: Antelope Decoy Hat

now that im up off the floor Laugh i have to say that is the goofyest thing i have seen in a long time. but what ever works and getts the job done right. i use to laugh at my buddy for sittin in a feild under a 5 ft goose decoy untill i seen the birds he came home with. but could you imagin sittin on a hill looking threw your glasses and seeing a gye dressed like that sneekin threw the bushes "that is a dedicated hunter that deserves to fill his tag". but as nocohuntr said watch out for folks takin aim at you if your crawlin threw the bushes you may look like a beded down goat when that hat is the only thing popin up out of the brush. it dosent matter how goofy it looks as long as it works, but good luck with it hope it gets you a monster goat. Thumbs up

Re: Antelope Decoy Hat

I wouldn't want to be wearing any decoy on me while hunting. Bad idea. I know of waterfowl hunters who have been shot because they were embedded in their own decoy spread and some idiot walked up thinking the decoys were real ducks. I've also had my own decoys fired on before. I think the makers of those decoy hats are more interested in getting hunters killed than game.

Keep in mind this is only for archery season only. You would have to be an idiot to even put one on during rifle season.

I think I just figured out my Halloween costume for next year too!

Decoy hat testing

I had a chance to go do some testing yesterday with my antelope decoy hat I bought.  I was curious how the antelope would react, so I took a drive to see if I could sneak up on some antelope just for fun.  I did not have a gun, bow, or any weapon to make that clear.

My first attempt I came across a good size herd just over a small hill along side the road on public land.  I parked the truck and got out and only walk a 100 ft or so.  I'm wearing the hat and the shirt.  I worked my way over the top.  The group was 35 yards away when I could see the first antelope.  I just kept crawling towards them in plain sight through the tall grass.  The group finally saw me and they just stood there looking.  10 seconds went by and one doe finally starting running which took the rest of the herd with her.  The best part, they only went 20 yards and they all stopped again broadside.  I kept crawling while they just stood there.  A couple even started walking back towards me.  I then got on my knees like I was going to draw my bow to see what they would do.  They all stood there for 30 seconds before walking off.  I waited for them to walk out of sight then got up and walked back to my car.  First attemp would have resulted in a shot.

Second attempt was just like the first but with only two bucks.  The did back away but only a few yards.  Still giving me plenty of time.  The reaction was better than what I was expecting.

Antelope season is only 5 weeks away, and after what I saw yesterday, I can't wait to see what opening morning has to offer.  I think this decoy hat is the real deal.

May try it out again this weekend.  I'll let you know.  Maybe i'll try it out on Mule deer if I see any.

Sounds like something to have

Sounds like something to have fun with.  Only you need a camera for when you do it.  I remember in the 70's and we were hunting antelope we found that they are naturally curious.  We would just take a white hanky tied to a pole and set it up.  It was suprising on how close that they would come in to get a good look at it.
