Who in their right mind gives the Queen an Ipod?

BTW, she turns 83 this month.

I would love to be part of the discussion that decided an Ipod was the best gift for the Queen. I mean, how do you even rationalize it?

Obama: Ok guys, listen up. I'm going to meet with the Queen and I need to give her a gift. Help me decide on something unique, memorable and under 200 bucks.

Staff: I know, let's give her an Ipod. I bet they don't have them in England. She'll get a kick out of it.

Obama: Hmmmmm.....an Ipod, eh? You know, I'm liking it. She can take it jogging with her, and to state dinners. It's not an eight track player so it represents change. She'll think of me everytime she uses. Plus, we can get it under 200 bucks.

Another one that people don't have much visibility on is that during a past visit, the British PM presented Bush a bust of Winston Churchill, which Bush kept in the Oval Office. Just prior to the recent PM's visit, Obama replaced the Churchill bust with Lincoln and returned the Churchill bust to England via the British Embassy.

He's probably kicking himself right now, because he could've saved 200 bucks by re-gifting that bust back to the Queen.

Better than tossing it in the trash. Churchill was a good wartime PM, but before that he had a long history as a racist mass murderer. He gassed the Kurds berore Hussien was born. Type in Churchill and racism and you'll get an interesting result.

To sum it up. The queen wanted was in need of a new iPod and is "delighted" with the gift. Why not leave this sort of thing to the people involved. I personaly am happy to see gifts that don't break the bank with my tax dollars. The queen returned the favor with a set of photos of herself.

Diversions such as this one only deflect attention from the huge effort needed to fix the horrendous mess that has resulted from 30 years (especially the last 8) of a disasterous fiscal policy. Maybe time for a big fat tax break for rich folks.

The iPod contained Obama's 2004 convention speech and his innaugural address -- it's in the article. Two speeches makes it "speeches" instead of "speech."

The queen also had an iPod already, and the royal family is filthy rich. Besides, this isn't Christmas we're talking about -- these gifts aren't vetted based on what the receiver "wants." The gifts are symbolic and are intended as a gesture of thought and consideration -- hence the prime minister's gift of a desk set made from the timbers of a former slave ship that was a sister ship to the one Obama's desk was made from. That desk, by the way, was a gift from Queen Victoria to Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880, and every president since then except Johnson, Nixon, and Ford has used it.

See how that works? The desk set was well thought out -- symbolizing not only the timbers of a long-standing relationship between England and the US, but also the dismantlement of slavery. In return, Obama gave the PM a set of DVDs you can buy at any Blockbuster that don't even play in Europe.

It's the thought, not the gift.

As far as the Churchill bust goes, that was a gift from England to the United States. If Obama didn't want it in his office, fine -- I can understand he might not think much of Churchill due to his Kenyan ancestry. But he could've sent it to storage with other White House artifacts, or even donated it to the Bush library. But you don't send it back. In the world of protocol, returning a gift is an insult.
