Did he get the bird? Got to expect a little collateral damage, just so long as he got the bird!

The VP should have been more careful and I'm sure he regrets it. Hope this Whittington is ok and the VP was using a 410.

In other news, I'm sure anti-gunners and anti-hunters will have a field day with the story.... Angry

Actually, I heard a news report this morning that said it wasn't the VP's fault. Other hunters in the group said that they had agreed to stay in a particular formation, just so that this sort of thing wouldn't happen. Whittington, apparently, broke the line and came up along side the VP where he shouldn't have been just as a bird flushed.

Of course, Cheney still have to carry some of the blame, and you know it's still going to be fodder for Leno, Letterman, and the like.

It won't matter what the other guy did. No matter what, the Left always tries to stick it to Cheney. Even if the other guy was completely at fault, they'll say Cheney is a moron and the "other guy's fault" story was a story fabricated to protect Cheney.

What probably won't come out is the extent of the injuries. The guy could've had four pellets that were plucked out with tweezers, and they'll make it sound like he's on the edge of death. Wait a minute -- sounds like what Kerry did with his purple heart!

How do the words" DISCHARGING A FIREARM IN AN UNSAFE MANNER" sound. That's the long and short of it, no more, no less and no excuses.
The shooter is responsible for knowing his target and where every pellet is going. Long grass, bushes or any other senario imaginable is not justification.
Quite obviously the victim was within range and was struck by pellets. Seriousness of injuries is a non-issue.

More importantly, what message are we sending toour members and especially our younger viewers?

I hope VP Cheney comes forward, takes responsibility for his actions and the matter is concluded then and there.

Maybe our Moderators will conside a "Firearm Safety Forum" in the future. Personaly, I would be following it quite closely.

VP

I would like to know more details. I have heard stuff that made it sound like the victim was blameworthy. Then I heard he was hit at a range of 30 yards and I lost my conviction that the victim might be at fault. Now I hear they are in high grass and had pre-agreed rules of procedure that the victim did not follow. I would like to know how many pellets hit the guy. A shotgun throws a spread. At 30 yards, the density is pretty good at the center but pretty thin far away.

It is well and good to say there can't be any accidents and no excuse is ever possible, but I don't think that is realistic. Let each judge of there own hunting experience. I deer hunt in the woods. When I shoot at a deer there are woods behind the deer. I try to keep others advised of where I plan to hunt and to learn where they plan to hunt. Nevertheless, what happens if I shoot at and miss my deer and there is a hunter unseen in the woods behind the deer, where no hunter is supposed to be? Or take another circumstance, what if there is a poacher in the woods behind the deer where no hunter is supposed to be -- and the hunter is not wearing hunter orange? What then? Unless we only take shots with a solid dirt backstop behind our deer how can we guarantee 99.999999999999999% accident free hunting? I shot my doe this year at about 30 yards with 180 grain .30-06, a pass through shot. So even when I hit my deer there was a dangerous projectile passing beyond the deer off into the woods.

You think you have all the angles planned out, but my experience has been that circumstances arise which don't accommodate themselves to your plans. People -- such as the victim in this case -- don't abide by the plans. Hunting has dangers, to think otherwise is probably an error. People get killed swimming, boating, skiing -- avoidable, preventable deaths.

I agree, great caution should be employed. One should always learn from others -- and one's own -- mistakes. But let's not get too excited and too condemnatory until we have all the details.

As I understand it, Cheney was on the right end of the line. Whittington was supposedly off after another bird elsewhere, and then came up on Cheney's right without letting anyone know. The point of coordination in this instance is to set up fields of fire, because unlike other types of hunts, bird hunting doesn't give you much time to look behind the target. If in fact the guy came up on the right unannounced, it's an example of terrible communication.

But I don't think any of that will matter, because this won't be played to the public in terms of how hunters operate. The spin is starting already. Once it became apparent that the victim may have been at fault, the press started digging elsewhere. Now they're covering the story with photos of the VP accepting a muzzleloader from the NRA at the national convention. They're also picking apart the way the story broke to attack the administration for not notifying the press immediately -- trying to argue that there's something more sinister at work.

I don't think they'll get traction with Cheney, because I think he'll be forthright. Besides, Cheney isn't the fish they're after. So they'll use the Katrina model and spin it as a case of White House bungling. You can see it developing -- there's got to be an angle that will work to stick it to the administration, and they're going to morph the story any they can to find it.
