American Buffalo

Hello All,
I have the chance to hunt buffalo in Montana on a ranch the end of this month. One person told me to study buffalo anatomy because the organs and bones where layed out differant then a deer, elk or moose.
Has any one else hunted buffalo or would you recomend it to anyone else.

Guide 2:
I personally haven't hunted buffalo, but I've seen it. Can't help you out with anatomy specifics, but the hump and short legs can create some illusions about where they're laid out.

From what I've seen regarding buffalo, they're less skittish than cattle. Buffalo don't seem to spook, and I don't know how Indians used to stampede them over cliffs. Shoot one and the others just stand there. That's good in terms of getting in a follow-up shot if needed, but unfortunately that quirk contributed to the near-extinction of the species.

Good luck! Buffalo is good eating (LOTS of good eating) and healthy for you, too. Might check up on brucellosis, though. I know it runs in a lot of herds, but don't know how or if it affects meat edibility.

We hunted west of Malta, MT on Jan 29. Just got the meat today from the butcher and had the first T - Bones steaks not bad no wild taste. Mrs Guide 2 says she hopes the rest is just as good because there is sure a lot of it.
I used my 300 Weatherby with 180 gr factory loads. I talked to a buddy who recomended a shot low and behind the ear, my buffalo was down before the recoil stoped.

I Have killed several wood bison in alberta canada and i know the structure of there body is the same. shoot for the regular areas just like a moose or deer. jstu be prepared to shoot again. the bison i hunt are big and mean!! one bull i killed weighted over 2000lbs. i use a 270 and it stops them well if ya can shoot. i have guided guys with 375 h&h mags and had a hard time putting them down. That time i almost got a horn in the guts. just chock it up to bad shooting!!
