ALL WEATHER COWBOY HAT

Fellow hat wearers,

I love full brim hats. I've got full vent cloth for landscaping, kangaroo skin for working in adverse weather, and straw for bumming around in. Now, I'm in the market for a fur cowboy hat. I will be wearing this as my go-to hat for working, hunting, scouting, etc. I want something that is going to hold up and retain its shape even if it gets wet. I'll say it now, I hate plastic hat covers! I know in grading fur hats, the higher the "X" the better the hat. I don't want to spend a months salary on this but I know it's not going to be cheap. For those of you that wear one regularly/yearly; how high of an "X" rating do I need to obtain what I'm looking for? I've read that most working cowboys use a 3X or 4X hat. That's great down in Texas but how do they hold up in the mountains when it's snowing on them? Can I get a 4X or 5X and treat it with a water repellant spray and be set? Do I need to go with a higher X to get what I'm looking for? I chose the Rocky Mtn forum because I'm sure you guys see all kinds of weather and I'm sure someone out there can relate to what I'm asking. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I don't know if there is any

I don't know if there is any set answer for your question. I bought a 2X Resistol hat 40 years ago and have worn it through the wars of hunting, fishing, work, and what ever else I did with the hat on my head and it is still holding up strong. It has faced rain, snow sleet, hail, and being stomped on in a bar a couple of times. The liner is and has been shot for quite a while but the hat still holds its form.

I also have a 5X beaver Stetson that I wear for special occasions but it stays out of the weather as much as possible.

I have no idea of how long a new one would last since I am still working on my last 2 that I have bought and see no need to buy another one.

I have a 3x, 5x, & 10x. I may

I have a 3x, 5x, & 10x. I may be mistaken but after 10x the quality of the hat is the same all the way to a 500x it's just the extras that are put into the style. If you get a 5x beaver or better they will hold up to anything you through at it including abuse. Below 5 they are blended so they don't last as long but like mentioned before they will still last many years. My last work hat was a 2x that I wore for 10 years after my son out grew it after 2 years, the biggest problem I had was when it got wet it smelled like a wet rat or something. I've just been wearing black hats for the last 45 of my 50 years and I'm no expert but that is what I've learned.

Good luck in your search.

Tried it back in the day, it

Tried it back in the day, it seals up the hat so it won't breath but holds in the stink. When one gets wet it just looks nice and clean when it drys out

The only thing that I have

The only thing that I have ever done to my hats is to give them a good brushing when they start to get dirty or around once a year. I have never used the spray on stuff for any of them.
