This ain't hunting

Just saw Wally Dalenback's (the race car driver) show on the Outdoor Channel. Today the hunt was in PA at a place called GSELLS WHITETAIL REFUGE. The people just walked around in the woods until a very large buck was spotted and then sat down and shot. It was obviously a high fenced operation because of the many huge bucks who just stood there while a group of people walked up and shot one. I went to GSELLS website out of curiosity and found I could shoot a 200 plus inch whitetail with 100% success rate for only $16500 plus $200 per inch for any inch over 200. A 190 inch buck was $15000. Oh by the way I learned that GSELLS was a sponser for a NRA youth hunter education program with certain winners being awarded hunts. What a way to teach kids ethics. Check out the website for yourself and give me some feedback while I go puke.

This is not hunting, it is killing and nothing else. Any Joe with deep pockets can get his buck of a lifetime, then make up a story to cover the truth of the matter. Shame on You!

That's like going to a restaurant and picking out the lobster you want, then holding it up to everybody and saying, "Hey, look at the lobster I just caught!"

Disgusting. Sick

Shoot a cow? I don't think so.

Not once have I ever claimed anything I shot behind a high fence was taken "fair chase". I'm sure there are plenty that will do that, but I don't see the sense in it. I don't feel the need to make excuses for not wasting my time and money.

Should we stop supporting the NRA now because they're giving kids the opportunity to take a nice deer? I don't think so.

We might not like it but it is a direct refelection on the road hunting is taking. Many many people refuse to mention ethics in hunting. They think that the only thing that matters are individual ethics. And in this case? Well the deer are bred to be shot. Cows are raised to be killed aren't they? How about every other domestic animal and bird we eat? Right or wrong, the sprit of hunting is leaving us.

I read that an elephant can be shot for 30K. A brown bear or polor bear for something like 8K. I find it kinda hard to blame someone for producing something like that when there are people willing to pay. Who is it that disgusts you? The hunter (?) or the operator? Both? Does that mean the rancher that produces beef and the slaughter house that kills the beef, sicken's us also? If you want to say that the cow get's a humane death, don't feed me that. I've been in a good number of kill rooms and that's whats sick!

The thing that bothers me about the whole thing is that they are telling you that someday hunting will go to the highest bidder and most just don't get it yet. What's a Colorado or Arizona elk gonna cost you? As tag prices go up we just pay up and keep going with the attitude that the money goes to fish and game to provide more opertunity for everyone. That's wrong, they only provide for those that can afford it! The rest we look down our noses at as poachers! They are stealing from us! We can afford it and they can't. Well bad news guy's, that operation seem's to be a legal business and those using it can afford it. I wonder if they would concider us anti's?

I would have no intrest in doing something like that and I don't think a lot here would. You could hunt Africa for what these guys are getting. But if that were the only hunting avaliable and you could afford it, would you still hunt? Or would you just give it up and walk away, even tho you could afford it? Or would you become a poacher? Think

Don makes some excellent points.

A couple of observations on this issue. People criticize it because it is too easy or the animal can't escape. These issues exsist in "fair chase" situations too. Consider hunts that take place on an island - is that fair chase since they are confined? Is it disgusting that someone gets a Roosevelt Elk from Vancouver Island?

Or how about Artic Musk Ox hunting? Never done it, but seen it on tv. Most boring hunt I've seen. Just walk up to the dumb animal and shoot it.

Same with hunting migrating caribou - pick a spot and wait for the one you want to come trotting by.

Are these acts not hunting? Are the disgusting?

My advice is go ahead and channel your energy to defeat anti-hunting groups and then when you've completed that focus your energy inward attacking other hunters that don't share your same vision of hunting.
