Advise on best cartridge for Elk

I have a hunt booked and wanted to know what would be a good caliper to bring. I leaning towards a 375.

A 375 would work for elk, so if you have one and you are comfortable with it go for it. It is definitely on the large side, so if you have other rifles in smaller calibers, say in the 30/06, 300 win mag, 338 range, you might be better served to use those as they are powerful enough for a clean kill, flat shooting enough to give you maximum range, lighter kicking than the 375, and probably much lighter to carry depending on your rifles. There are many other calibers in that middle range that would work great as well.

Good luck and have a great hunt!

txbritman has pretty much summed it up I'd say. I have shot elk with a .270 up to a .375. I have to say I prefer the .300 mags and up for longer shots and the bigger premium bullets for quartering shots where I need to penetrate the near shoulder. I have a nice light .375 that I use for guiding a lot in nasty bear country. I am working up a load with the 260 Accubond so that I can use it around home on moose and elk.

If you can handle the .375 well....go for it.

Instead of going with something huge, try and go with something that you feel comfortable shooting and can consistently put put pills inside a 4" circle. Certainly nothing wrong with the 375, but something that large isn't neccessary. I've killed all my elk with either a 7mm mag or a 300 win mag and hadn't ever had one tell me that they didn't like it. The 270 should be your absolute minimum no matter what the circumstances.

Agreed and want to add the 7mm mag is a good all around gun for most people in the west. Enough killing power without murderous recoil.

I'll throw in a thought or two as well: don't forget to look at the 300 wsm or 325 wsm. The 325 seems like a great Elk / Bear cartridge and the 300 is a great all around setup. I can't say enough about my 300 wsm in terms of accuracy and the fact that it's a lot lighter and handier than any magnum rifle I've owned - with good performance to boot. I've been through them all and really liked some (the 280 and 338 specifically) but the 300 wsm has topped everything I've owned as an all around package.
