Advice on DIY Muzzleloader Elk in Colorado

I'm with NH Hunter, for MZ season you may want to move to the Sleepy Cat side into the white river national forest and the flattops. This area has a lot of elk, is higher elevation and is public land. If you can hike as far as you are determined to this area should provide plenty of opportunities.

The units involved are what the DOW refers to as the White River GMUs in their hunting guide brochures.

Man, I am getting excited! My boys can't quit talking about the trip. You'all should hear my 7 year old bugle with his mouth! I really think he could fool a bull! When do we get the results of the license drawing?

It is early June.

Just keep practicing, get to the range, and studying the map. It's about any of us can do until the snow at least melts.

I saw your mention of using a hand cart to haul out your elk. Check the regulations where you plan on hunting. If you are in a Wilderness area or a Wilderness Study Area, its very unlikely that you will be able to use ANY wheeled vehicle (even hand carts are prohibited). Also, many areas here in Colorado have been designated as "Wilderness Study Areas". They have been assigned the same regulations as a registered Wilderness Area but "Study Areas" do not show up on most maps. Before you make your final plans, call the Forest Service AND the BLM offices for the area you select. Be prepared to tell them where you plan to be and ask about any "Wilderness Study Area" designations applicable. It could save you some frustration. Brick Wall,)
