absolute best elk cartridge? let's hear it folks

My friend uses a Thompson Center Contender carbine in a 30-30 with a 180 grain nosler partition and leupold scope and he kills a elk every year with it.

Speaking of BLRs: I have one in 7-08 and will be using it for mountain goat in about five weeks. I also have one in .300 WSM and will use it for a special bull elk tag I drew in southeastern Montana. I could use the 7-08, especially if I chose a heavy, tough bullet like a TSX or something similar, but I hope for a big bull so I want a little more gun. A 7-08 is enough gun for elk if you use the right bullet, 150 grains and up, and keep the distance reasonable -- under 300 yards.
As to best elk cartridge, I've shot them with a .30-30, .308 and .45-70, but I would think this .300WSM makes more sense. Any rifle that will shoot a 180-grain or larger bullet out to 300 yards will work fine, providing the bullet placement is there.

I have shot elk with the 308, 7x57, 7mm Rem Mag and my last two with my 6.5-06. My pet hunting rifle as I write this is a 6.5x55. I would not hesitate to hunt elk with it. It's more about bullet's than cartridges. A 6.5x55 with the right bullet is far more effective than a 300 mag with the wrong bullet. I think you should have a bullet with the min ability to penetrate to the vitals from any reasonable angle. I don't concider from the back reasonable. So the bullet could have to penetrate a shoulder at worst to get to the vitals. That takes a well constructed bullet of good weight for the caliber used. The 30 cal, 150gr bonded bullet mentioned earlier I would not use in anything. At the same time I have used a cup and core 6.5 140gr bullet twice. In fact, I have used cup and core bullets for everything, just choose the right bullet.

I don't think I'm answering to origional question. If I had to choose one cartridge and live with it, I'd pick the 7x57 I think. I'd use either 154gr Hornadys or 160 gr Speer Hot Cores, which ever shot best. No particular reason for the 7x57 other than it rolls of the tounge so well!

7 Ultra Mag with 140 grain Triple shock is my round of picking. May not be the heaviest hitter out there but does the job just fine for me.

Yeah, that's a heater. I prefer bigger and slower, but you say potatos... Like I said earlier, I have used a factory loaded 180 grain 300 weatherby at about 190 yards. It nastied up that elk (I fing elk to be one of the nastier smelling beasts, in terms of cleaning etc.), but dead is dead.

OK Maddenwh,

You started this thred. Whats your favorite? I have none but would select the 7x57 for no particular reason. Actually, low recoil and good bullets and it sounds good talking about it!

Let me guess, 9.3x62 or the Whelan? I say that because you are admittly a larger bore fan. Am I right?

You got me on the nose. Don't own a 9.3X62 or 64, yet, but have heard great things. Like I've said, I really like the 35 cals... whelen, 350 remy, 358. I also like the 338-06. I've got a new 9.3X74R (the double version of the 62, as I'm sure you know) that I want to try out. This fall, I'm taking out my 358 win blr, assuming There's a spot other than for muzzle loading. The paying clients get first picks. The .358 is not that good after 200, but I'm not that good after 200. If I had to pick one cartridge, it would probably be a 35 whelen or a 338 win mag.... that's two. 338 winny works better and has better range, but it has more recoil and mine is heavier than my whelen. I'm not a one gun guy, but I'd go with the Whelen. I'd have picked a 375 H&H if mine were light enough, or maybe the 416 remy (lighter than the rigby). Really anything a little bigger than an -06 works for me. I'm lazy, I don't like to look to hard for them squirrels I'm shootin'.

I've had two 338 Win mag's. Kind of a love hate affair. While I think its a truly world class cartridge, for me it kills on both ends. I have a 30-06 with a pitted bore that I want to have re-bored to 338-06. Two problems; first it shoots so well and next its an old expensive custom built by Paul Jaeger in 1945. Some time back I convinced myself I was going to do it and was ready to go drop it off. Then I shot it one last time and put it back where it belongs. I wonder if it hasn't earned the right after all these years to stay the way it was built?

But I'm gonna have that 338-06 one of these days. And that's as big as I want.

I saw on the outdoor channel the other day a guy hammered an elk with a .444 lever action in the new hornady revolution ammo. That elk dropped like a 50lb bag of deer corn. .444 Slow but deadly. Yes
