absolute best elk cartridge? let's hear it folks

Let's get something a little more exciting and personal going here. We need to livin up the elk forum a little. My question; what is the best, most efficient, or just your favorite elk hunting cartridge. No bow hunting or muzzle loaders included please. I'll list some of my faves and then give a final answer after we get some responses here. Some goodies: 358 winchester, 350 remington magnum, 300 weatherby, 338 federal, 9.3X62, 35 Whelen, 338 winny mag, 375 H&H, and last of all, but certainly not least is the 416's (either Rigby or Remington). These listed are some of my favorites and all rifles I own and have experience with... have blooded nearly all of them. Feel free to include other calibers, and please tell us why yours is the best. Thanks, and let's get this thing heated up. Evil!

I'll get it started, even though I've never gotten an elk.... Big smile

I have gone one time to hunt elk in Oregon, and the cartridge I bought, on recommendation from others, was a 180 Grain, Trophy bonded Bear Claw, in 30-06...........

But, as I said, it was only on advice. Have not actually shot an elk with it yet.....

30 cals for me, most of the folks we guide we recommend somewhere in 30 cal range. .06 and 300 mag likely have harvested more elk then any cal out there and for good reason . Anything from 06 to 388 are excellent calibers. More important is a person being comfortable with the rifle, shoot it accurate and be able to hump it in very rugged conditions and terrains.

I shoot a single shot in 30-06 and is dang good with it. If I were to go on a Elk hunt I'd load up with 150gr accubonds out of the 06 and go to work. I have never hunted elk but have seen several fall flat on their face when being it with this combo.

I always opt for a nice hefty load from an 06 on any game in the US

what do you fellas say about elk hunting with the 7-08? I use mine primarily for mule deer, and it has of yet worked flawlessly. It's got slightly less energy than the standard .308, but it will probably hold up for elk within 150 yards. Mine is one of the straighter shooting cartridges I have, so with goog shot placement, I think it might work superbly. Besides, it's a BLR lever action, so I would have at least a couple of more quick opportunities if I had him poorly the first time.

The 7-08 and a BLR. Sounds like a premium set up for the thick rain forests in Washington. Most shots are close. Sometimes to close. They can get a bit startling.
I've seen a 300 savage, in a young one hands, bring down a nice Roosevelt and it doesn't perform as well as the 7-08.

Anymore, I use recurves for the majority of my hunting.
If a guy wants to use a medium weight round on large animals. I would recommend that they polish up on their tracking skills, as a just in case scenario.

Ditto on what Fuzzy said. Depending on terrain and situation a 7-08 will do the job in alot of places others maybe not so much. Would it be my go to rIfle?
no. can you make it work, sure cool Though Ill go on record as not recommending it for Elk as it is a medium game sized caliber but with handloading and good field skills is should do what you want it too.

I'd love to try it out this fall, but I've also got a stainless BLR in a 358 win mag. I'm a huge fan and advocate of the 35 cals (for reloaders due to ammo availability). I usually, or have in the past, used a 35 whelen, 350 remington mag, a 45/70, and a 338 win mag (also shot one with a 300 weatherby I got rid of for no good reason). The 35 whelen and 350 remington mag are better for the areas in Colorado that I hunt because some shots are at longer distances, but I'm dying to bloody up the 358 BLR... It shoots purdy dang straight, and I know within 2 hunsky, I'm golden.

Ammo

I have a setup almost like ridgerunner. Thompson Center Encore in a 300 Win Mag. Toppped of with a leupold 3X9X40 letting loose 180 Grain Nosler Partitions. This setup is awesome and makes it hard to change to something different.
