I'm looking for some opions/thoughts on using the following load for elk hunting this next season. 500S&W using Barnes XPB 325 grain, 2000 ft/sec, 2800 energy. I know this may seem a little extreme, but rather be overkill than underkill. Anyone have any experience with Barnes XPB bullets? This load seems to provide the highest energy levels for the 500 S&W.

Hornady is making a factory 350 grain XTP that claims a bit more energy. They also have a 500 grain soft point partial jacket, although the energy at the muzzle slips my mind at the moment.
Corbon, has many offerings from 275 grain to 440 grain. The 440 grain is basically a lead plug with a copper follower, which is probably not a great choice for hunting. The 275 grain has a deep dish hollow point (Barnes X HP), which would probably be good for hunting, but has lower muzzle energy.
Are you hunting with a handgun or a rifle?
