will do

60 grains of 3031 with cotton ball and grits as filler (didn't have any corn meal) was better.  Cleared the barrel but was still way too light.  Test loads with 3031 and a felt wd instead of cotton ball, some with IMR4350, and some with IMR4320 are loaded and waiting for a trip to the range.

I'll keep you posted.  No luck finding teh other powder yet.

Range report from the 500 express:

I tested three loads in the 500 express last night between rounds of shooting trap.

I fired two cartrdiges with 65 grains of 3031 with a felt wad and filler up to the cast 325 grain projectile.  At 25 yards they hit paper about 9 inches high and an inch apart.    I really can’t ask for anything better than that. Dancing

I didn’t get good ignition with the 4320 load, but 60 grains of IMR4350 performed solidly as well.  Those slugs hit about 6 inches high and 3 inches apart at 25 yards.

One of the 4320 load projectiles failed to clear the barrel which gave me the opportunity to drive it out and put a caliper on it.

The barrel diameter is .503

I think that is fantastic news because it opens the entire inventory of 50 caliber muzzle loading projectiles up to me for loading in my cartridges.

This is going to be fun.

All of my test loads to date have been light and the heavy gun soaks up all of the recoil.  She is a pleasure to shoot and I am very pleased so far. In love

.500 BPE

Hej Groovy Mike.

New on the site here.

I have a H&H double .500 BPE from 1883.

My gun shoots very well with cast bullets 440 grains paper patched. Load 65 grain Rhino 11 (nitro for black). Almost the same as IMR 4320.Filler Bostik backing rod ½ inch and primers FED 215.

Best wishes

Leo

Thanks Leo

Thanks Leo.  I have not tried paper patching and have not yet found aload that I love.  I have found that 70 grains of 3031 and a 50 caliber muzzle loading power belt projectile seem to work pretty well though.  I appreciaet you sharing the load data.  I may have to try something similar.

Smokeless Loads for .500 black powder

Hi There, My name is Gert Cassell from Delmas South Africa and I have been shooting my James Lang and Sons Black Powder Express ( 1893) with Smokeless powders for years now.
I use our Sonchem S365 in cases that I have turned to decrease the volume of the case. Our S365 is very similar to your IMR 4350. I use 80grains of S365 ,solid felt pad on top so that the pad (filler) touches the powder and base of the bullet. I shoot lead cast bullets ( self cast) of 460 grains at a speed of plus minus 1700 fps.
The bullet size is .510 inch diameter . case length 3.00 inch

If you have discovered any other workable load, please share.

Graeme Wright in his book "Shooting the British Double" uses 92-93 grains of imr 4350 behind a 480 grain bullet with felt pad.

Thanks Gert

Thank you all for your help.  After owning it a year or so I swapped my 500 BPE to a friend who was moving for a thousand pounds of lead.  That ought to keep my other boom sticks in casting fodder for quite awhile, but I won't have any more updates on shooting the BPE.

It was fun though.

Mike
