50 VS 54 Cal Flintlock

Getting ready to purchase a flintlock to extend my season here in PA.What are the pros and cons of the 50 cal and 54 eg velocity,energy,projectile drop.I have two friends who own 50 cal flints and swear by them but can offer no comparison to the 54.I only plan to hunt whitetails and probally will only ever own one flintlock and want advice on the right caliber.I know both will do the job.Do I gain anything with a 54?Thanks in advance from a newbie.

Hello from Germany!

the cal. depends on what you will hunt at. But for my side I will recommend a .54 RB shooter because the .54 is more powerful and has much more enrgy than the .50. The drop of a .54 PRB in comparison to a .50 RB is not so much more when shooting at 100yds. With the .54 you can bring down any game on the planet. The charge should be 90-110 grs Goex FFg. Sight-in the rifle at 125yds dead on and have fun. What rifle are you thinking of?

I also find that the .54 does not fowel as much as the .50 between shots. I am able to get more shots off before I need to swab the barrel. I only do this in the field,when I'm target practicing I swab between each shot. With my .50 I have to swab after 3 shots because after that I would have to use a hammer to get the ball and patch down the barrel, with the .54 I have gone 12 shots before swabing.
