458 Lott Velocity

Some Opinion Please:

Frank Barnes in his Cartridges of the world, spoke of attaning an honost 2300 f.p.s. out of a 22 in. barrel in .458 Lott. Most data that I have read online suggests low to mid 2200 f.p.s. velocity range from tthe 22 inch tube. I have a lot of respect for Mr. Barne's wisdom but read to the contrary on his stats. Also, (can't remember the website) , but have read a difference of 10 f.p.s ,as a general rule. for every inch of barrel length in this caliber. I realize it depends on bullet weight, power, and rifling rate of twist, among other variables. I own a custom made Lott using a remington left hand action, shilen barrel. 24 in, but was muzzle braked 2 inches down. Was not my first choice on the break, but who can argue with the wife when it was a gift. Very accurate rifle.
Thank You for any input, Phil

Thanks for the info Kevin, will check it out. I have been on 2 african safaris in my life and netted 2 fine examples of cape buffalo, one with a 500 A Square and the other with a 460 A Square short, the latter which I own. Would love to try the Lott, but that may not be for some time. Thaks again for the input.

458 Lott Velocity

I own a Mauser 98 that was a 458WM before I punched it out to a Lott. I've had no problems getting 2200fps with the Barnes TSX an have used the 450gr TSX on a few cape buffalo at 2200fps out of a 22" barrel. It was bang flop in each bull with the exception of 1 bull I hit on the shoulder and followed up with a round in his hip as he ran away...we found the bull 150 yds away stone dead 20 minutes later.
* I have loaded the 450 gr TSX to 2400fps over my chronograph using H4895 but the recoil is more stout than I care for and on buffalo I see no real reason to do so.
I do not care for any brand of solids on buffalo .

Thanks for the reply SM. I load from 6.5x55 to 375 H&H . Have yet to load the Lott. I have to date ran a box of Hornady 500gr solid full patch loads from the rilfe and it shot a 5 shot group at 100 yards just over 1 1/2 inches. (In two sessions that is). It is scoped with a Leupold vari-x III 1x to 5x with quick release mounts. Randy Selby out of Wapiti Wy did a beautiful job on the build, Also, nice job on the buffalo. I am proud of the two I have taken and know the feeling, Phil

GS Custom 450 GR FN

I will load my 22" Lott with GS Custom 450 GR FN Solids. They penetrate better than any of the heavier bullets out there and will give you an extra 100fps without having to do any major changes to your loading setup.
Best of both worlds and may PH's swear by them.
If you want to shoot nice and flat with it or need a good bullet for first shots on buff then the 315 gr GS HV is your best bet.
Good luck

Thanks for the input Ian. I plan on sending some 450 solids down the barrel to get a chrono reading as well as clock the 500's. My personal experience with the bulls came from a 600 gr A Square Monolithic round nose solid in 500 A Square and a 500 grainer in the 460 A square short. Both went down quickly, 600 grain and he ran 20 yards and fell, 500 gr put him down where he stood. Let ya know the velocity results. Phil
