.44 Mag ammo

I'm a newbie on this forum and a total novice in firearms, and I need some sage advice. I have searched on the web for ammo that will work in both an S&W .44 mag revolver and a Ruger .44 mag Carbine. The info I have read thus far has left me confused.

Any ammo that you buy over

Any ammo that you buy over the counter for a .44 Remington Magnum will work in either the rifle or the pistole.

I was hoping someone would answer this question because it made me curious.  Which came first the pistol or the rifle ammo?  Are there other ammo that can be used both in a pistol and a rifle?  And then the last question is why?

Let's see as far as a rifle/pistole ammo combinations.  There are .38-40, .44-40, .22 long rifle, .357 magnum, .44 magnums/.44 special, and the .45 long colt and others that I know that I left out.  These would be out of a lever action rifle such as the Whinchester 73 or the Whinchester 92 and for the .22lr the Whinchester 94-22 and all kinds of other rifles.  The .44 Magnum fits the Ruger Carbine and their lever action along with the Whinchesters, Marlins, and Henry rifles.  All except for the Ruger also have chamberings for the .22lr, .357/.38, .44 mag/.44 special, and the .45 long colt.  I'm sure that I left out riles and cartriges that should be listed here but this is off of the top of my head.  Then you can go to all of the Thompsom Center Contenders/Encores that are chambered for rifle rounds that are shot out of their single shot pistole's.

So as far as what came first?  For quite a few it was a pistole round that got chambered into a rifle and for others it was a rifle round that got chambered in a pistole.

Chalking this up to the something new I learned today.  The more I am on here, the more I realize how much I don't know about guns.  Thanks for the little lesson and information.

It is appreciated.
