3rd rifle...GMU 59 or 47?

That's my question to myself. I am familiar with 59. It's in my backyard. But 2010 stats show a dismal 3% success ratio for 3rd season last year.

Then there's 47 up by vail. 10 times better success rate for 3rd season last year. High country, lots of national forest and little private land. Lots of water. Lots of snow to hopefully push them down. But, unfamiliar with it and it's 3.5 hours away and would need to make 2 separate trips over 2 different weekends.

Thoughts? Advice? Suggestions on areas to look in either unit?

The more I look, I'm thinking

The more I look, I'm thinking GMU 43, instead... decisions, decisions....

I'm not familiar with any

I'm not familiar with any units in Colorado, But I'd say go where the elk are. The stats can be a little bit misleading. Usually with higher sucess rate come more pressure. That is unless it's a limited draw area with limited tags. 3.5 hours isn't to bad of a drive, but your running the risk of seeing more people than elk. The person who would know about sucess rates and hunting pressure would be Exbio. Good luck with your choice and I hope you can drop your elk.

NO contest

no contest, unless you're considering 43 also... Forget about 59, unless you don't like wilderness hunting, lower pressure units, lots of public land, triple the elk density and overall good hunting.

Thank you. So much of a learning curve. I'm really leaning to 43 right now. Getting a few more warm fuzzies the more I look for and get suggestions and ideas.

Yeah, really leaning towards

Yeah, really leaning towards 43 right now. Reached out to an outfitter and a former guide to see if they could help steer me in the right direction. Hopefully, I'll find an area that holds some to give me at least a chance at one. I'm looking at topo maps, ndis, etc. and pretty sure I won't get there in person before 3rd season opens which really stinks. I really like getting out there to scout.

I live on the border of 43

I live on the border of 43 outside of Carbondale but haven't hunted it in nearly 20 years as I've spent all my time on the other side of the river in 444. Most of the talk I hear though is outside of Marble around lead king basin, also a lot of guys hunt and do well in the Avalanche creek area. I don't know how hard these areas get hit these days other than Thompson creek that gets pounded every season.

No first hand knowledge though as it's just been far too long to be of use.

Thank you for that. I was

Thank you for that. I was initially looking a little north of the southeast corner of the unit. Then started seeing the concentration areas near Carbondale on NDIS and thought alot of that area within 3 miles of the highway could be nice but might have the most pressure. I'll check the areas you suggested, find the water and areas that would seem to support small herds, and combine that with whatever I can gleen from other sources. I'm starting to feel alot better about heading up there now that I've a couple of general areas to start looking at.

Thanks again.

gmu 47

Just got back from scouting this area.. Looking great for a OTC unit.. Saw two really nice bulls. Long hike to find a big one. This unit will tear your heart out.
