.357 mag with 180 HPs on Mtn. Lion (personal protection)

I've never hunter these animals, and over the years, have read that they are easy to kill.

Most accounts recommend the .44 mag. I have one but it is heavy to carry. I have a .357 mag. that is great to tote. I shoot it well and I was thinking of using 180 grain H.P.s Winchester Partitions, for defense against the cats while I'm in the mountains. (Also, would be used against black bears)

Any experience with the .357 mag hunting these critters?

I keep hearing how good the .357 is on cats, if you just put the shot into the heart lung area.

I agree with that, however, the .357 is marginal at best according to the "gun scribes of note", and my experiences with it in the field shows, that it is totally lacking in killing power. Especially, when everything just doesn't go right.

The idots that keep promoting the .357 "as a do all" must have very little experience in dealing with these beast.

Using a Marginal Caliber on such hugh animals is only a stunt. IMO.

What really gets me, it people who decry a gun with more power (that will do the job), because of felt recoil, so they go out and get one that doesn't kick as much.

These sissys need to learn how to shoot a real gun that will kill a cat like Bob Hagle said, "will kill not when everything is right, but when it's not."

(Sorry, I just couldn't resist.)

Don

What's with this moderator over in the Rocky Mtn section? Does he/she wear their "nickers" to tight.

SEEEZZZZ! Give Me A Brake! Are they all like that here? They need to loosen their cinch's a little.

No, I don't think they need to loosen anything.

well from my auncle telling me stories of cougar hunting in california his choice of weapon was always a colt python in .357 mag. he shot 158 gr hollow points. Now if you say a .357 is in adequete get this he use to shoot them as a boy with a a ruger six shot 22lr revolver. now it was the wrong thing to do but that taught him how to be a good shot. he used qik shock ammo.
