338 win mag on deer

Hi all, new to this forum. I recently had my 30-06 go down and can't get it fixed right now. The only other gun i have is my 338 I use for elk. I would like to know about what type of bullet to use for deer size game with the 338? I use remington 225 grn PSP's for elk, to much for deer, I was thinking about the Winchester 200 grn's. Any suggestions? anybody use this caliber for deer?

Personally I'd stick with the 225s since you're already familar with them and know where they shoot in your rifle. I doubt they'll make a noticeble difference in wastage one way or the other.

I have a hand-me-down 30-06 and when it was givin to me it was sighted in for 180 grn bullets. I wasnt sure if I needed to adjust the sight s if I used a lower grn bullet, so I went with the 180grn because I didnt have time to mess with the scope. On saturday my bro shot a doe with it and there wasn't much of her left, we had to wastee alot of the meat due to it being bloodshot and ripped to shreds. I'm deffinately going with the smallest possible grn bullet next time.

Thats what I'd do unless there is someting smaller, I'm not familiar with that caliber but it sounds really big Is 180 the smallest they make?

bullet

Barnold - you shot a doe with 180 grain bullet and there was nothing left ? Did it still have spots on it ? We use 180 grain soft points for deer all the time. We also use 150's and 160's. Either will work just fine. Unless the deer is really small don't worry about the 180's. They work fine too.

180 grns is the smallest i have seen, and I was wrong it wasn't winchester I saw make them 180, it was Federal. the smallest winchester makes as 200 grns.
Yeah its a pretty big caliber, but there is bigger. A friend hates shooting it but I love it, never tried it yet on deer, but I will soon.

I shot I descent sized buck earlier today, about 180 lbs field dressed, and the 180 grns didn't chew him up as bad as it did the doe.

338 Win Mag will be OK for deer, even though it's far more than needed to get the job done.

I also agree to stick with the 225-gr. loads for short-term, but if you have the time and don't mind tinkering a bit, going down to 200-gr. Ballistic Tips or the AccuBond is something to consider.

Both are loaded by Winchester and Federal.

FYI: Nosler beefed up their 30 caliber (180-gr.) and larger Ballistic Tips and they are much stronger than the (165-gr. and lower calibers) bullets envisioned in most hunters' minds. As far as toughness, I consider a heavy duty Ballistic Tip to perform similarly to the Core Lokt, with the AccuBond having delayed (slower) expansion.

All of Nosler's bullets are streamlined for maximum downrange velocity and energy and the faster a bullet is traveling when impacting an animal, the more violent the expansion / shock. Their high BC's enable them to have around 10% more energy around 250 - 300 yards than a Core Lokt or Power Point.

As an example - Winchester says that their aerodynamic 180-gr. 30-06 Ballistic Tip / AccuBond has more speed and energy at 300 yards than their 300 Win Mag pushing a inefficient 180-gr. Power Point at 300 yards. But put the Nosler bullet in a 300 Win Mag and it easily outperforms the 30-06,

Most hunters only use the Power Point or Core Lokt in a Win Mag and 30-06 hunters with a Nosler bullet are in effect, getting magnum like performance due to a hi-tech premium bullet.
