Agree. Others to consider would be .270, 7mm-08, 25-06...but .308 is an excellent multi-purpose round. It's what I shoot and I have no complaints. Thumbs up

.308 good choice?

My son, who just turned 14 on Dec. 22, really wanted a rifle....I said fine...I'll put 200 down on a rifle and you work off the rest...

...after lengthy discussions with many hunters here in the north....my 14 year old wants nothing but a .308

...he's shot my 30.06 on many occasions...and he shoots his older brothers .270 all the time as well...but he wants a .308

...he owns a 30.30 and he also shoots my .303 very well.

....the .308 seems like a good choice to me, for him, as well...

best of luck

alright thanks!

i use my dad's 30-06 recently. but my friend is letting me borrow his .270 and actually killed my first deer with it. i asked my dad if he would get me a rifle and he said he would if i thought of the gun i wanted. so i will tell him that.

thank you all for the replies

I have used a Savage .308 for several years and it has never let down. I'm sure you will like the .308 also.

.308

is a good rifle, can knock down some deer and will also knock down bigger game like Elk w/ less kick. One of the rifles I have is a .308 bolt action ruger.

I have a Rem 700 in 308 that I have used on everything from little Blacktail to the big Roosevelts.
Just a few months ago I had the barrel shortened to 20 inches and it shoots every bit as well. It's probably my favorite lower 48 big game round and puts out enough energy, for anything I'll be chasing after, at it's MPBR.

I think you have a goood plan & are going to have a pretty good taxidermy bill. The .308 will work on anything in the lower 48 and if you don't reload you can find ammo for it anywhere.

I "grew up" with Remington model 788's(don't make them anymore). .308 was probably the most popular caliber in that gun. I have the .243, the 30-30, and found a .308 at a gun shop recently that needs a "bolt stop". I made the gunsmith put my name on it for when he fixes it. He wouldn't sell it to me "as-is", because he says it's dangerous. I have never owned a .308, and can't wait to get this one!! I know lots of folks who praise the .308 highly. Good Luck!!
