I wouldn't get rid of the 300 just because of this entrance hole. Just try some other brands of bullets.

People are going to sometime in their hunting career, expereince a bullet failure. Whether its a premium or a cup and core. Read the post, there is always somebody complaining about a bullet failure. You just can't design a bullet that will do all things all the time. Close range high velocity on thin skin, to long range slow velocity big animals. Failures happen.

Just try a few and find one that works well most of the time for you and go hunt.

I just don't see how any bullet no matter how it fails can make an entry wound like that. If you look the flap of skin looks pealed back. You sure you didn't shoot him with bird shot out of a shotgun lol.

Yea, it's a little hard to believe that is the entry. But we believe you.

DON'T GET RID OF THE 300!!!!! Shame on You! Probably going to kick yourself once you do, trust me. My first gun was Savage 300 Win Mag. I traded a guy for a Savage Model 99 .308 (at the time we both had no clue what type of gun I was getting Big smile ). Although I wouldn't trade my .308 for anything... I wished for years I still had my 300 Win Mag. I finally bought one last year and wont give up that caliber of gun again. Ive got distance, descent knockdown power and it's straight shooting.

Just try some different bullets or do some research and reload your own.

I am no expert on strengths of certain ammo, but I would simply suggest that the last thing you want to do is shoot a bear and have him NOT go down...

Honestly I don't blame you.

My suggestion is if you want to stay with cheap ammo go get some Winchester 150 gr Power Points. They do better than the Core-lokt's and your resight should be very easy if you even have to move the scope at all.

If you want to get some better ammo go get some Federal Partitions in 165 gr and resight although it is pricier ammo.

This has happened to me twice. Once with a .270 130gr Power point on a doe at 85 yards and then with my son using my 7MM RUM 139 gr SST Interlock on a little buck at a 110 yards. Both of them where quartering hard away.

This is the doe with the .270. (The antlers were just for fun)

And the buck with the 7MM RUM.The hole in the deer is the same size as the hole in the hide.

Thanks for the input every one!!
Looks like my season is pretty much over. I came down with some thing today and I havnt been seeing enuf sign to make it worth trecking the 3 miles in being sick.
I'm not selling the 300 because of the prob I had with the Deer. I made up my mind before the season that I wanted somethin a little more unordinary for a rifle. The reason for the 308 is that I can get 1000 rounds for around $300 to have fun with at the range and still get all the quality factory rounds for about the price of cheep 300 rounds. And it wont blow my shoulder off!!
