.300 win mag / .300 wsm

first of all like to say what a great forum you guys have here looked at a couple different ones and this is the best one so far. that being said i see alot of good advice on here wondering if someone could give me the lowdown on the differences if any between the .300 win mag and the .300 wsm besides the length of the cartrige and the action on the gun its chambered for. gonna spend some serious dough on a new browning x bolt, pretty much settled on one of these but not sure of the pros and cons of each.

300 win mag pros: cheaper and more available, easier to find factory rounds

300WSM: short action, lighter, shorter rifles(typically) generally thought to be more accurate

All the above is splitting hairs between those two rounds. Thumbs up

I don't think you can go wrong either way.

The advantage the 300wm has over the 300wsm is the 300wm can throw bullets over 180grs better than the 300wsm. The wsm falls off, on performance, with bullets over 180grs. Other than that, as Chestergolf stated. It's splitting hairs with these two rounds.

A lot of shooters report less felt recoil in a WSM. I don't know for sure, as I haven't put it to the test -- it'd pretty much require the same model of rifle weighing the same weight to test. But from what I've read, it has to do with the powder loadings.

All I know is that I love my .300 WSM. And in the last 2+ years since I've had it, the popularity and available loadings have grown significantly.

I have the 300 WSM and the accuracy is excellent with a wide variety of loads. My personal preference is the WSM because it burns less powder for the same purpose.

Regardless, both will get the job done.
