A 180 gr Partition bullet from a 300 weatherby mag has 2775 ft/lbs energy at 300 yards. That the same or slightly higher than the same bullet out of a 30.06 at the muzzle, so if you wound an animal, you will have to find another excuse :

The weatherby 180 grain barnes x bullet as proved its self to me.
I have taken 5 elk with this bullet from ranges of 120 yards to 327 yards and have all been one shot kills with great pass through on all animals.

The new federal 180 grain tsx load would be another load to highly consider.

I can shoot the barnes x in a 3 shot group under 1" through my sako 75. This gun loves this load.

Are you shooting a 300 win mag in a weatherby rifle or a 300 weatherby cartridge in a weatherby rifle? Its not clear from what you wrote....

Sierra makes good bullets, the gameking would be fine for game; however if its the matchking you may want to closely consider if you want to use that bullet on game. The matchking is a great flying bullet however it is simply lead with a un-bonded copper jacket; perhaps not as hard hitting as you would want in a elk bullet at range....

I've reloaded for the 300 Weatherby(not mine) and it consisted of 80.0 grains of H4831powder with 180 grain bullets. Extremely tight grouping.

I agree with the other guys, the 300 Weatherby is more than gun enough. I have 6 elk with mine and everyone was a 1 shot kill. All passed through. It is a great gun for Elk.

One tip though if your elk is still standing shoot again! I saw a buddy of mine unload 5 shots from his 30-06 in a bull and he still had to finish it off up close. All the shots hit in the vitals. They can be extremely tough animals.

Good luck
