30-30 for wild pig?

Anyone use a lever action 30-30 for pig in CA or is that too minimum?

I've thought about getting slightly larger caliber like 35 Remington or even 444 or 45-70. Not sure the 35 Remington will give me much more punch to make up for the massive and inexpensive availability of 30-30 rounds. And the big 4's may have a lot of recoil and am worried about not practicing enough. Opinions appreciated!

30-30 is plenty for pigs. Use the same guidlines you use on deer; no more than 200 yards and inside 150 yards would be better. There is one exception to this - on really huge boars, no shoulder shots. They have a large saddle of gristle over their shoulder and you may not get penetration (true for all calibres) so head shots or quarting shots are the ticket there.

I've had some moderate to good success with a 30-30 as well.

Hunting Maps

hoser, where do you plan to hunt with your 30-30? Some places in California require a long shot across a ravine, and others are in close cover like chaparral. I have a web site where I have a few hunting maps for new hog hunters. If the area that you plan to hunt is not there, let me know.

Maybe I don't need another gun?!

Bummer! HA! Any excuse is always nice.

Seriously, I've always heard that 30-30 is not enough against larger boars -- especially if it charges. I guess if only broad side shots, it should be fine.

Recommended ammo?

Any good factory ammo out there for this purpose? If not, what do you recommend to use (especially if the darn boar charges and a frontal shoulder shot is needed)?

federal makes a 170 grain nosler partition round for the 30-30. I would not hesitate to double shoulder a large hog with that round. It mushrooms nicely and punches a nice hole through game. A good 4x scope like the weaver K4 would top your rifle nicely.

I'm glad to see that some of ya'll had good results with the 30-30. I shot a 300+ pound boar at 15y with a 30-30 lever and the bullet never made it past the armor plat. Was a dead on bolier room shot. I followed up with another but still the same reults. My hunting partner dropped it with his 300 win mag on the spot. I used my Rem 700 7mm Mag extensifly for hogs and never needed a second shot. Only had 1 run and it fell within 20y. I've taken them from point blank range to just shy of 300y. And weights of 75-498 pounds. But with any gun use what feels good for you and what you can shoot on the money at any range. I prefer'd a bigger gun as I had more close encounter than I had britches to change into after them. I done all my hogs hunting up near Monteray and Priest valley. On both public BLM lands and private lands. Here is a pic of the last boar I took. Was just about 300 pounds.

ya gotta come behind the plate and angle it up into the vitals on a big boar or just put it in his ear! i've saw some of these big russians have inches thick plates!

Your right about that armor plateing. I remember one that a Buddy and I teamed up on and when we skinned it the hide and fat layer was nearly 3" over the front shoulders. Ya need a stout bullet with a slow expansion or it'll never make the boiler room. I always prefer'd the quartering away shot.
