What kind of bears are we talking about here?
Blacks or Griz/Brown?

Cutting the gun down? Ok not a bad idea. Definetly iron sites. The bigger the bullet the better. Go with the 220s.

Trade it in on a handgun? Not unless you use the gun alot and are good with it. Handguns are much harde to master and not for the novis user if life and limb are depending upon it.

I would say trade it in on a 12 guage shotgun (pump or auto) with a short barrel. A good gun with lots of stopping power at short range.

Frankly, in bear country, I would prefer to carry a canister of pepper spray than a .30-06 rifle.

This is the best advice here, sorry guys.
When we hunt in bear country, even though we all have big bad guns, everyone caries pepper spray. It is simple to use and very effective. Big smile

Have you ever had or know anyone that has had the opportunity to use the pepper spray on a charging bear.

How effective was it? Did it deter the charge? What was the distance?

A little more insurance sounds like a better idea. If you don't get it in the eyes or the wind blows it back at you. You are a hot lunch.

Why is it that everyone here is looking for an argument?
I never said don’t take a gun. If you have the intestinal fortitude to stand there and hit an angry charging bear and kill it, then by all means use a gun.
But if you don’t, which most hunters don’t (IMO) then you need something else. The pepper spray is most effective from 30-40 feet, every little accuracy is needed. It generally discourages the animal from coming back.

Two years ago my buddy and I were dressing the elk that he had shot while our other friend went back to see if he can bring the truck closer or maybe even rent an ATV.
We were excited and chatting up a storm when the big ginger color black bear showed up about 75 feet behind us. I stood up yelling while my buddy dove for his gun. All I had with me was my knife and the pepper spray on my belt. The bear come bouncing up to about 30 feet when I hit it with the pepper spray. It spun into ball on the ground then got up and ran away like hell. My buddy fired two shoots, none hit. We both damn near pooped our pants. So yeah you could say I know of some one who used pepper spray on a charging bear.

My friends, who hunt in Colorado, never hunt with out pepper spray. Also in many areas where you can fish and hick there are no firearms aloud so pepper spray is the next best thing.

I think you misunderstood my intent with the questions.
The pepper spray sounds like a good deterent but, I have zero experience with it. Outside of the marketing and add promotions
Thanks for the first hand information.

I spend quite a bit of time fishing the rivers for salmon and steelhead. Have seen many bear but, never had an encounter with a one.
I don't usually carry a deterent of any sort unless I'm back in some remote area. Then it's usually a 357. Just because I own one. Most of the time i don't even remember I have it with me.

Sounds as though the spray is very effective.

An experience as that must really get the adrenalin going.

its a fact that there are more people killed by whitetail deer every year than bears, wolves and cougars combined here in the US,maybe I should come out with a line of pepper spray for deer....hmmmmm...I would have a hellofalot more intestinal fortitude with a 7 mag or a 357 in my hand vs.a can of pepper spray!

LOL, Fuzzy sometimes the intention doesn’t come across in print.

The stuff has work for me and others I know. I’ve used the spray on a mountain Lion also and it works great. The lion was not charging he was just too close for comfort.

Let’s put it this way my buddy that went down to get the truck had to finish the field dressing since our hands shook too hard to hold a knife.

The gun that I always wanted for protection is a 10 gauge magnum semi-auto with a short barrel and loaded with buck shot. Nothing is deadlier at close encounters, at both ends, LOL. Big smile

Sounds like a good combo to me,probably a nice folding stock and an extended mag tube to go along with it!
