30-06 Howa - Ammunition

Hi folks, new here, thanks for having me!

I've recently bought a 30-06 Howa rifle with a preditor 8 moderator but I'm finding that remington 150gr bullets could be a bit closer - just wondered if anyone here had one and what factory ammo you use to best effect?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Roo

PS - wasn't sure if there is a place here to sign in and introduce myself - sorry for just pitching in!

Howdy All, I'm new too. I have a Vanguard which is basically a Howa 1500.
I have similar results with Rem. Core-Loks. I have amazing groups with Win. Ballistic Silvertips 150gr. 4 grouped smaller than a quarter at 200 yds. They are expensive at $51 and change a box eye roll

Different rifles tend to like different ammo. You'll have to try several brands and styles to figure out what the rifle likes.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

I've also got the Weatherby Vanguard but in .243 - excellent against Springbok this year but the moderator I bought (AUS5?) doesn't group at all well with Remingtons. I zero'd it at 100m without the mod - fabulous, add the moderator and it's all over the place!

165gr sounds like an idea, I'd been using 150's although I have to say that RWS 170's through my .308 work really well, so maybe I should have a go with those as well as Winchester Silvertips - great advise.

Thanks folks, off to pack now - may have a short-notice trip to Africa on Friday to deal with some Hyaena!

Cheers

Welcome to the site.

I've been trying to figure out what a moderator is. Now I've narrowed it down to two things, either that potato on the end of the barrel or the guy shooting it? Yes What is that on the barrel anyway? Whats it do?

We call them suppressors here. Some times they will affect accuracy on sporter weight barrels. Probably something to do with harmonics or what not.

Most everyone I know who has one on a rifle uses a heavy barrel for them.

You may want to check that the moderator isn't causing the barrel to touch the stock too much.

That would be me - lol (on the non-business end!)

Thanks for the feedback on the barrel touhing the stock - I didn't notice before but I'll have a play with it this coming weekend.

Moderators = sound supressors / silencers

Aparently, the addition of a mod should make grouping better, but thats not what I'm finding with the .243 - it's surgical without it, but a scatter gun with it!

Quick bit of feedback regarding which ammunition works best through my 30-06 Howa Lighting. Over the last couple of weeks I've been using various different bullet weights and manufacturers and the top four are:

1st Place - 150GR Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip
2nd Place - 150GR Winchester Super X Power Point
3rd Place - 180GR Sako Super Hammerhead
4th Place - 150GR Federal Power-Shok

I fired all at 25m and 100m at static targets using bench-resting and bi-pods and measured the resulting groups to arrive at the above results - I hope this helps if you have one yourself!

Cheers
