2nd Season Rifle Elk

After being unsuccesfull in the New Mexico draw, I am now considering an over the counter tag in Colorado.

What do you all think? If do get one, I would probably be hunting in units 75, 77, 78, 80 etc.

Any comments or input will be appretiated. Thanks.  Thumbs up

Good luck

There are poeple who know a lot more about CO OTC units than me, but here is my $.02.

Last year I hunted unit 81 for 3 days then drove across the state and hunted unit 70.   I hunted wildreness areas in both, but in 81 the snow and hunting presure had driven the Elk to private land and/or across the state line into NM.  I found a lot more sign in unit 70.

This year I put in for preference points, with 70 as my 2nd choice and 65 as my third.  I have a better chance at unit 65.  If I don;t get drawn and decide on OTC I will go 70.  I am told it has the largest elk herd in the state and the sucess rate is better than most units in SW colorado.  There are not a lot of large bulls, but I am simply looking to get my first bull since I started chasing them 25 years ago, and have not been drawn in NM for the last 15 years.

info check

Truth check:

Excellent success?  True:http://wildlife.state.co.us/SiteCollectionDocuments/DOW/Hunting/BigGame/Statistics/2011/2011StatewideElkHarvest.pdf

Raghorn unit?  True, about 30-40% of the available bulls are killed each year, leaving a handful of older bulls.

largest elk herd in the state?  Probably more like the 3rd largest.  There's been some fluctuation between 2nd and 5th (Grand Mesa, San Juans, Bear Ears, and Disappointment) over the years, but I don't believe there has ever been a herd closer than about 50% of the White River herd.  Of course, most of these also cover very large geographic areas, so aren't always the highest density, but they are usually in the upper tier of units in that respect too.

There's a good reason why Texans love the South San Juans.  Lots of public land, good mix of wilderness and ATV access, good elk herds and OTC tags and some of the first public land elk units you'll come to when driving in.

Be nice Still.  I'm still

Be nice Still.  I'm still waiting for a Bull who wants to commit suicide and jumps in front of me.  But even that does not help if I can't get draw a tag Confused

As far as the club goes maybe we can start a 12 step program.  We can still around in a circle taking about the time we came close, the time we didn't see one and I could complain about the draw Help!

Thanks Ex.  The guy who told me about the size of the heard was a outfitter, he might have been talking about density in the eastern part of Unit 70 itself since the western part of unit is mainly sage and doesn't hold much elk.

PRhunter, check the tip sheet page and the unit map software on the DOW page they are very helpful.  Right now the tip sheet page is down, since there seems to have been inaccurate info for some units. But it should be up by the time tags go one sale.
