2nd Season OTC 54 Bull/Cow Advice

Hey everyone I just purchased an OTC either sex license for Elk in 54. I saw another thread giving some advice on the area but being new to hunting I was wondering if anyone else has some input. We plan on doing some scouting in September. I've read about northern facing slopes and trying to stay above 10,000ft unless the snow could have pushed them down. Any other advice? Also, anyone want to point me to some prime real estate in the 54 area? We will have access to horses if that helps. We hunted the Gunnision area last year but all we came across was 1,000 other hunters.

I'm heading that way in the

I'm heading that way in the first season I hope, if I can get a left over cow tag. If not I was gonna buy a over the counter tag for unit 55 or 54. Never been before and have no idea on what to do or where to go, just wanting to get my toes wet and see what it's all about. Are you renting horses? Cause I would be interested in that, if not I'm gonna rent a 4 wheeler. I'm gonna start out high and see if all the people push them up high so hopefully I will be there waiting on them. Weather depending of coarse. I'm not going to the extreme on this trip as its just mainly a scouting trip for next year when I have a few more in my crew.

I suggest the horse so you can get off the roads. Othewise you'll be with 1000 other non resident hunters on ATV's.

2nd Season OTC 54 Bull/Cow Advice

It sounds like ATV's will only get you so far because of motorized vehicle restrictions. Like the other member said, it will get you with the other 1000 hunters. We have friends that live in Gunnison so we will be using their horses. We are headed out the end of this month for a 2 day scout. From what I've been reading the main access ponts are at the south of the GMU but I would like to start on the east and head west. Hopefully we could jump a bull as hunters push them north. It looks like rough country but I'm hoping the other hunters will do some of the work for us. Any ideas on access points to the east of the unit?
