2nd Season Colorado Elk

Critter, I understand where you are coming from and that was my first assumption we have the same problem with them in Nebraska. Yes there are still some big deer in the area. I didn't see any big ones this year last year I saw a dandy by the springs and a few years before that saw the biggest muley I have ever seen up on Suicide. Had to be pushing 40" on the outside. Every morning for 3 mornings we bumbed into him and he would run right down throught the elk. This deer would of scored over 220" he was a big boy.

So you guys think basically it's Mexicans poaching elk? While I'm sure that may happen in isolated incidents, I don't think it happens enough to wipe out an elk herd. In areas here in my neck of the woods, Southern Colo., I've seen elk herds where they haven't been in the past and none where they have been. The ebb and flow of numbers. Also, poaching out an elk even if doing the poachers cut, backstraps and hindquarters, is a tough time consuming job and easily spotted if done in areas of opportunity ie off roads and highways. You'd think if it was going on to a large degree in an area the DOW would set up shop to catch em. And, lastly, most poaching I've ever heard of in rural small town areas is done by indigenous locals who know how to do it and get away with it.

soco hunter, this is just my opinion. In this area you see pickup loads of hispanic ppl with assult type rifles with no orange and several times a day you can here some rapid fire (up to 40 shots) and the next day you can go to the area you heard the shots and see alot of birds flying in and out of the oak brush

Odd to me is all. I've lived where there's tons of native Latinos as well in the present lot's of either legal or illegal aliens and I don't see this. In some shooting areas around town I've runt into gangbanger types who like to go bust some caps with their AK's at bottles and such, but I've never seen those type in the field hunting. And poaching while curbed will never be extinguished, but on a scale to decimate an elk herd is unlikely.

It is hard to point a finger at any on group of people but it is just my experience and what I have seen. The poacher that I saw and turned in was an illegal from Mexico I know that for a fact along with the one that came off the hill one January with 13 deer in the back of his truck so it is easy to generalize. In the same area I have taken 2 young elk on cow hunts that had been shot either in the spring or summer of that year and survived and now that same heard of around 30 animals are no longer in the area. Weather they were all poached, hunted out, or just moved out of the area who knows. But they were in the same general area for 15 years and now they are gone. It is also interesting to take a ride at night into a couple of areas and see a few spotlights running on the side hill just out of sight of the main road along with an occasional shot.
As far as the DOW setting up in areas and catching the ones that are doing it that takes time and officers that they really do not have. I believe that we only have one DOW officer in the Eagle County area and he is quite busy without any other problems. That is where us hunters need to help out a little. That is also why I will spend some time out in the sticks with my spotting scope sitting on a hill side with a pen and paper and my GPS. Weather I'll do any good or not is yet to be seen. But I'll try since I now have the time.

hellomcfly, I only saw may be 7 deer all week total. One fork and the only branch antlered deer I saw was clear onto Suicide Mt. Very dissapointing. In years past there were always about a dozen deer that hung right around camp this year I only saw a doe and her fawn. Hopefully they will make a come back I have seen some big deer there and enjoy seeing them. Next year I will have enough preference pts again to draw the 2nd season but, after what I saw this year I think I'll wait another year or so to get my tag. It may even take another pt or 2 by next year for a non-res to draw.

I agree with Critter... I see that a lot down here near Grand Junction. Thhey will make thier kills then bring them to my shooting area, which is well hidden yet very close to town, to dress them out and get them home. I see numerous carcasses there every season, esspecially late. Now, I have to tell you that I used to be a police officer in a neigboring town and these illigal invaders are given a free pass around here because during the fruit harvest season they are a commodaty. Our sheriff says we cannot bring them to jail unless they commit a felony. Driving with no license (or any ID for that matter)? No insurance? Expired tags? open containers? driving under age? these are all things that we, the legal immigrants, would get nailed hard for. yet they we can't even issue them a citation because they have no ID. So, they get away with it because the law does not apply to them. They can dessimate our herds, dessimate our social programs that should be for our needy, and drive down the value of jobs. People, lets really think about whats important and do something about it. This is a great nation, made great by families like yours and mine that immigrated here and were pround to call themselves Americans and they flourished. Theres is a very different mentality among these criminals, they are raping this country and everything about it that is good is being abused, not to mention that they are bringing thier 3rd world culture of crime to our back steps. Now, MR. MODERATOR, please understand this is not an "OFFENSIVE TOPIC", so please don't delete this. this is a matter of homeland security and crime from square one that directly relates to all of us and is affected every aspect of all of our lives. It has nothing to do with race, or political partisanship. It has everything to do with our children's future.
