2nd or 3rd season Gunnison Basin Deer

What are your guys thoughts on the difference between hunting the 2nd and 3rd seasons in Colorado for deer? I am looking at unit 66, which I have elk hunted in and I know that one good snowstorm will/can force all the deer to the wintering areas by late Oct. I am thinking that a majority of deer will be lower and not too spooked from earlier seasons, which should increases my chances.

I have the points to draw a 2nd season, but I'm years away from a 3rd season tag at the current rate. When I started applying for a unit 66 tag it was like 4 pp for a 2nd season tag and 6 pp for a 3rd. Now the 3rd season has basically doubled. I would rather use my points now and get back to hunting units like 35, 63, and 40 every few years. But likewise I don't want to "throw away" 7 points. I will be combining a hunt with my brother, nephew, and my 6 yr old boy. My nephew will hopefully have a bull tag and me and my little boy can hunt the lower areas for deer.

Second question for you guys that have kids what age did you start taking them hunting? I took my boy last fall in OK at 5 yr olds and he enjoyed it and wants to go back. But I know that several days in a wall tent and camping can change a little ones attitude. I started tagging along at 4-5 with my dad, but did not carry a rifle/shotgun until 12. Thanks - Preston

2nd or 3rd

As far as looking for a "BIG" deer I would take 3rd season every time. I hunt 2nd season every other just becuase I do love my muley hunting and can't wait 2-3 years inbetween.

As far as my kids.... I have had them hunting with me since before they could walk. And this is just my .02, but, I think people get hung up on what age. If you want your kids to love the outdoors, hunting, and fishing start them early. My daughter and two sons are some amazing kids (now 22, 21, and 19) and I could not ask for better children. Also my parents did the same with myself, brother, and sister and they are all hunting families also.

Quinton - I was raised the

Quinton - I was raised the same way. My dad was taking us when we could walk, and sit somewhat quietly. It seems kids change a lot by the time they are 10 or 12 and they miss out on a lot of good times when they are younger if we don't take the effort to get them outdoors.

I feel the same way about waiting on tags. The main reason I have waited is because I have been working out of state since 08, and was hopeful the deer number would rebound where I like hunting.

I would like

To know how many points you have? If you have 5 or better, I would consider strongly going 4th season in one of the mentioned units you listed. Would not even blink at that one!!! Now that I have opened my eyes I see you have 7. Go 4th season in unit 35 for Deer and Elk are either sex at that time and Cow.

I have hunted 35/36 in years

I have hunted 35/36 in years past, but don't think I want to use 7 pp up there. Not that there are not big deer up there, but a 3rd season takes 0 pp.After additional research I am more than likely going to apply for a hybrid tag and use the points in a couple years when I can get a 3rd season tag for gunnison area. Thanks for the help.

It takes

0 3rd season because it is hard to find them then!! 4th, when the rutt kicks in, the Big Boys come out and are really love sick. Seen it in person and was amazed! Saw 7 does for 2 days and then bam, Big bucks came out and you could throw rocks at them if you wanted!! I don't want to change your plans. You have a good idea of where you want to go , so you should do what feels comfortable! If you draw your tag , send us some pic's for sure!!! Thumbs up
