270 vs 30-06?

Hey guys i am getting a new gun by next season and am not sure on what gun i want to get. I am stuck between a 270 mag and a 30-06. what do you guys think would be a wiser choice? i would be mostly useing it for white-tail and elk.. i know a 30-06 can take down an elk but ive also heard that the 270 can too? what grain would i have to use?..ive heard that the 270 is easyer to shoot with because it shoots flat on alot of distances .. now i dont know if that true or not so thats why i am asking you more experienced guys out there... Thanks alot for the Help!

270 vs 30-06?

Your ? is going to generate many responses. First, here are the differences between the two. The cases are the same size but the o6 bullet is .308 diameter vs .277 diameter. The 270 case is slightly longerfor safety reasons(won't fit in the o6). A 150 gr 270 bullet is therefore longer and narrower than a 150 gr 06 and is the reason it shoots flatter & faster .Both 130 & 150 gr in the 270 hit aat same POI(point of impact) at 200yrs
Now for the 06?
Obviously the versatile calibre of rifle to ever hit the market(a 30 cal invented in 1906 thus the same 30.06, in case someone was wondering)
Bullet weights can range from 110 -220 grs,but I havn't checked lately so don't start picking this apart readers.
Ammo is so widely available for both and both cals are so popular, they will be around foreever. If you reload and perfer a 150 grbullet the 270 outperforms the 06.Otherwise the 06 is the perferred cal. I will elaborate on any part of this post if you wish. Oh ya,to add to the 4 th line,o6 too thick to fit 270.
I happen to reload my 270 with the aformentioned 150 gr bullets but I also have the same rifle in the 30.06. OH the best cal? HOW THE HELL WOULD I KNOW ?

The 06 is a pretty flat shooting cal too. I'd go with it unless recoil is a factor.

Just to add a couple of things:
Free Recoil Energy(recoil) cannot be calculated in the use of factory ammunition unless manufacurer will devulge the following info:
Velocity in fps(v),bullet weight(bw) powder weight in grains(pw
You will need to know your gun weight in pounds(including scope ,sling, clip etc(gw)
When you havedetermined(not guessed) the formul is:

Free Energy Recoil {V (bw +1.75 pw) squared
_____________________
64.348 x gw

imp Velocity over 2500 fps change the 1.75 in formula to 1.5

Here's an example from Metallic Carridge Reload( not my calculations)

270: gw 8.5 lbs,pw 55 gr.bw 130 gr, v: 3025 fps...Free recoil.. 17.5 lbs

30.06 gw 8.5lbs pw 52 gr, bw 150 gr v: 2875 fps..Free recoil....17.9 lbs

Pardon my formula view, I didn't know how the put the little 2 above the last bracket on top line
Personaly, I couldn't determine recoil difference with an off-shoulder shot form either calibre, but WHAT THE HELL DO I KNOW

You really cant go wrong with either caliber. both are proven in the field but if your going for shear knock down power go 30.06. It is the 12 gauge of rifles becuase of its versitility in the field.

awsome guys! that helps alot haha in some cases too much info Thumbs up hahah yea i guess kickback is not too big of a factor for me because i can shoot my 30-06 pretty comfertably..can you really feel the diffrence in kick back from the 270 and the 30-06? i have never shot a 270 so i wouldent know... in a 270 what grain would you need to take down lets say an elk? and with a well palced shot can u drop it on the spot?

Well, you would want a 150 gr bullet for the larger game if using a 270. Did you ever consider RELOADING? Check my posts and you will find a 270 load I posted, and because it's a reload, velocities/energy is about 20% better than factory load. The reaon factoryammo is"lighter" is for safely reasons as manufacturers have no idea what firearm will be used, it's age/condition. etc. Actually a hot 270 reload in 150 gr is the same as factoryload in 7mm mag. Bet ya din't know that?
Recoil story: Gun solvent not completely remove from barrell will increase recoil probably about 10 %(acts likehydraylic pressure) At onetime, about 40 years ago rifles were shipped bith a packig grease in barrel. I did't know that and supporteda black/blue shoulder for a few weeks. Mud or obstruction ina barrel can blow it all to hell and probably will.
In honor of the 06 I must say this: A great reloading cartridge and can obtain extreme accuracies,velocities/energy. You can "load them done" for target shooting(saves money) andpump them up for "your elk".
ALAWAYS OBTAIN PROPER INSTRUCTION BEFORE RELAODING if you go this route
Hope this was of some assistance to you!

I Had a Tikka 270 about 15 yrs ago Got a great deal on it, shot it at the range and sold it. You won't beat a TIKKA. Superb quality. It had an adjustable trigger(between 2.5 - 7 lbs i beleive, accesable from inside the clip well) What a nice feature it was. Regardless of model you will not go wrong with a TIKKA...
