.243 win for black bear

.243 for black bear. I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I handload my shells and was wondering if a 100gr full metal jacket, 100gr solid. or 100gr barnes xtc will do the job. currently i will have a 20-30 yard shot so placement will be so easy. also, I am not sure on the full metal jacket law in minnesota. Im going on a guided hunt and expect a 300+ bear. Thanks for all of your help and good luck this hunting season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to Big Game Hunt Forum! Big smile

While I personally would use a 30 cal. bullet on Black Bear instead of a .243 Win (and in answering your question), you might consider the following ammo to put the best odds in your favor:

* Hornady Lite Mag 100-gr. BTSP Interlock @ 3,100 fps
* Federal Premium 100-gr. Partitions @ 2,960 fps
* Remington Core Lokt Ultra Bonded 100-gr. @ 2,960 fps

As a taxidermist, you're probably familiar with the anatomy of black bear. This will be invaluable when hunting them with a small caliber .243 in knowing exactly where to place your shot. Plenty of range time is suggested as well.

Happy hunting and good luck with your decision.

Ok how about...

a 12 gauge sabot (rifled barrel of course) on a 20 - 30 yard shot?

For very short distances, it's hard to beat a 12-gauge slug, as long as you are accurate with the selected load. Quite a few new slug loads have come out recently and they're all superior to the standard rounds on the market.

FMJ's are not allowed in Minnesnowta for hunting.......NO exceptions. You can use a .243, but why? It has to be one of the worst choices you could make. Especially for the guy who has to go find the bear in the dark.

.243 will do the trick but at that distance I would recommend a 12ga or 50cal muzzleloader.
