If you want to stick to a smaler bullet I would go to a .243 but if your moving up to a 30 cal. the 30-06 or .308 are both great around bullets I think!

.270, 30-06 & .308 all sound

.270, 30-06 & .308 all sound like good choices for NM.

If you really look at it any

If you really look at it any round from a .243 on up should work in any western state except for Alaska.  My preferences would start at the .25-06 and go up from there along with any of the newer short magnums or even the old magnums.  It is all a personal prefence on what you want to shoot.
