2010 Scouting Report Part 1

This past weekend I did some scouting up on the Gila National Forest in New Mexico.  I found some potential camping areas and I saw lots of deer.  Most of them does and a few bucks here and there.

I was hoping to see or hear some elk since I have an elk tag, but I was not that fortunate. Bugling is at a minumum if any in that part of the Gila and actual elk sightings are rare.

Does anyone have an idea of where to start looking for elk in the lower 16B unit? I'll be back up there in a few weeks and I'll put out more info.

Any input from anyone that knows the area will be appretiated. Thanks!Big smile

PS There was some bear sign aswell.

I drew a cow tag in 2005.

I drew a cow tag in 2005.  Then I put in again in 2008 and had no luck. NM does not have the point system so everyone has the same chance to draw each year.

I'll keep you all updated. I should be going back up there in a couple of weeks.

Everything looked green when

Everything looked green when I was upthere last.  We actually got rained on that night.

I spoke to the Forest Service guys and they said they have had more rain than usual.

Good luck on your hunt. More reports on unit 16 will be out soon.
