So since its linked from Drudge means its not legit?? It originated with the Washington Post, not Drudge.

Now about the concern about the troops. In the grand scheme of things, 20,000 really isn't that many. The article didn't state it, but I'm guessing that with the reduction of troops in Iraq, a large number will be displaced and need to be reassigned to other areas.

I'm not a in a panic over this....I just think its a terrible idea.....

500 troops in one major city can do a lot of bad stuff ....I've never bought the idea that US troops wouldn't go after US citizens if ordered......I think they would follow orders like they've been trained.

I'd much rather see federal funds used to bolster state and local police to up their capabilities.

If we were talkiing 20,000 U.N. "peacekeepers" I would probably start believing in the black helicopters but our own troops here does not give me pause. I believe the oath goes something like "all enemies foreign and domestic". Still an interesting observaton though and something we certainly need to be aware of.

This is an intriguing topic. I'd have to study it some more before I offered a real opinion, but it does seem to raise some concern in regards how the troops might be used and the Posse Comitatus act.

I am reading an excellent book right now - Who Killed the Constitution. It is about how all the branches of the government have veered from the Constitution.

One key point that is applicable here is that emergencies do not create new powers - the Executive branch still has the same powers it had before an emergency. The only difference is that an emergency may be a reason to use the power.

Funny how a Washington Post story is legit to liberals until it's reprinted on Drudge.

Tough situation -- they can set it up, but there's no way they can employ it without revoking posse commitatus, unless they make it a National Guard function.

The problem is what this country would be prepared to do in the event of a WMD attack. Anything nuclear would require specialized expertise. I'd argue that a biological attack would be far worse, because it would be contagious and lead to a rapid breakdown in society.

Think about a scenario involving an airborne plague moving rapidly through the population. You're going to have a mass exodous from infected areas, which could be deadly if the refugees are carrying the disease and aren't yet symptomatic. So what do you do? Lock down borders? What will people do to protect their children from their neighbors? Aside from medical services being rapidly overwhelmed, law enforcement would be swamped as well. If it got bad enough, I can see the country getting desperate enough to revoke posse comitatatus to save itself.

But short of that, I don't see US troops patrolling the streets -- people won't go for it unless the need is dire.

The reason I reffered to Drudge is because as I suspected that's where the idea came from. I'm talking about the idea to be scared. Also I'm pointing out that the only time a link comes up to Wapo is when someone reads about it on a righty web site because of course no self respecting wing nut actually reads a respectable news source with regularity. If they did they might well turn into something like movement conservatives.

Drudge is scum. He calls himself a gossiper not a reporter, his words. His favorite tactic is to retract something and appologise the next day. Too late, damage done, usually sex, best one was wife beating, that's a pretty strong thing to read across the nations papers. He often enough has poitical gossip, who is in, who is out, who is sleeping with who. Often he just smears for the rigtht or repeats misleading info to affect the news. Nielsen reports the hits to his web site are dropping off a cliff. Not much original content and folks are more into reality news, (as apposed to just making sturff up) Loved his polling predictions via Zogby on the 3d.

Back to the news. We used to have these people called the National Guard to provide this kind of service, instead they are off fighting a war of choice in Iraq. Imagine the scenario, major catastrophe in a big US city, state and local govts paralyzed being in the path of the disaster themselves, sounds like.,,,, uhm,,,, Katrina, well best call out the mercenaries to protect the banks. Tell the truth I trust US forces a lot more than Blackwater. The last time I can think of anyone fired on US civilians was Kent State and they only got a score or so, four fatalties.

So what was Drudges purpose in reporting this? Fear. Fear sells, grab your teddy bears wingies. I'd almost classify this one as touching on one of the three Gs.

Sounds a lot more like the left wing mainstream media to me. Apparently lefties only point these descrepancies out when it's a right winger.
