This will be my 1st turkey hunt in my 40+ years of hunting. I drew a fall tag for the Bosque del Oso SWA. I also have an archery buck tag, muzzleloader bull tag and a bear tag for the BDO SWA. I also took off work The whole season, Archery/muzzleloader from 8/27-10/3 except for a few days of family obligations in there. Any tips would be appreciated, especially in the care of the bird if I am lucky. Since I cannot call and was told not much noise from the birds at fall anyway, I am going to spot and stalk(ambush).
I will probably be using my bow with rage 2 blades. What broadhead would you recommend? I will also have in camp my 12 gauge, 30.06, and a 50 cal. muzzleloader, but I hope I can fill more tags using my bow. I saw a lot of turkeys while scouting the last 2 mths (weekends). Located 3 seperate groups each a couple miles apart. I never saw where they came from or where they went after going into the brush, but they were in the same general location, but at different times, the 2-3 times I went scouting for them. Some past within 10 yds from me, while I was watching a bear feeding on acorns/berries about 80 yds away. Some I spotted as far as 200 yds out and sat as they came in and fed within 20 yds. One thing I noticed was all the groups were in different elevations and topography. I figured there was so much water and food everywhere that they were happy anywhere. Talking to past hunters in the BDO they were saying the turkeys were up high above 8000 ft during the muzzleloading part of my season (9/25-10/3). However I think it would just take an easy glide off of one of them steep canyon ridges to bring them down to 7000 ft. like a 1000 ft roost down to feed.
