1st trip to Kansas Chautauqua County unit 12

This is my 3rd trip to Kansas. It will be my 1st trip to Chautauqua County unit 12 early muzzleloader. Will be hunting on approximately 10,000 acres unguided, but the landowner is helping me get acquainted with the land. Only problem is I would like a 170 or better. My friend the landowner is not a hunter he just said the deer out here have big horns. Is anyone familiar with this part of the state? Is this a good place to find a trophy of that class?

There are big deer all over Kansas. But 170 class bucks are rare even in Kansas. Suggest you shoot for something bigger than your current best. During Sep ML season I have had good luck hunting alfalfa and soybean fields late in the afternoon. Cornfields are really good if they have just been harvested. Just make sure you are in a blind or stand where the young bucks and does that usually show up first won't bust you. Fields near cover and far from roads are the best places to look first. I will be out there with my flintlock longrifle and a first time hunter teenager this year. Good luck and let us know how you do.

i grew up in chautauqua county.. 170 is few and far between here just because of the hunting pressure in this area. I have 4k acres on the east side of unit 12 and some in unit 11.. last year we had four guys kill 150s and two that were bigger one was 168 and other was 173 like i said this is rare but can happen here. We have 4k acres ranging from 80 acre farms up too 400 acre farms. all this running through big hill creek. got standing corn fields and bean fields.. 2/3 of are hunting is heavy timber excellent bow hunting with tremdous muzzleloading!!! we run twenty corn feeders over forty tree stands tower blinds all semi guided! we scout and hang treestands feed and put foodplots in, currently we have 12 foodplots doing some research with bio logic and whitetail insitute!! should be a real exciting next couple years

Thanks for the replies. I have shot some deer in the 150s and hope to do a little better. Maybe my expectations are a little high, I am at the point that im willing to hold out for a trophy. I was just inquiring if this county is known for big deer. I will post any pics when I return from my hunt. Thanks again Happy Hunting.
